I wonder if they acknowledge in the script that Cliff is a black man? Feels a mistake if they don’t as it would take away some of the gut wrenching realism of parts of the story. I don't think they explicitly changed anything in the script to acknowledge that, at least I didn't notice. But that added some extra layers to the story which made the show more fresh, at least for me. Cliff is very well received as an American tourist in Berlin for most of the show, and you can't help but think how that would be totally different in not a long time after that. Wait, now I am not sure anymore. I have a line in my mind "black and gay, I couldn't possibly be both" or something like that. But I can't remember if I heard that in Cabaret or somewhere else. |

I don't remember any reference to him being black.
But I swear when he was showing Sally the train ticket to Paris it had a QR code on it!

No reference made that he wasn’t white. My trip got extended by a few days. So hoping to win the lottery Friday or Saturday. I really need to see this again. That’s that good.

In fact it would have enhanced the show to add a few references in. Nothing major but a few looks and couple of lines of dialogue. This is why I don’t think a women of colour playing Maria in the Sound of Music would work through. As they can’t just have a few looks or references - having the Nazi’s want a man married to a non white women softens the evil of them. |

So according to twitter this and Moulin Rouge only have six lottery tickets per performance?! My hopes of getting to see this just plummetted! I did think there would be many but six, and you can only get them in pairs, that truly is a lottery!

Bear in mind the Kit Kat Club only has 550 capacity so 6 isn't bad. BOM only had 10 lottery tickets and capacity over double the size. |

Beginning to sound with the revamp the stalls or at least rear stalls may not be the place to sit, which goes against all the info in September when booking opened and it sounded like the circle views in the old playhouse were pretty bad site lines and comfort. They seem to done quite the refit in the auditorium at least

And can I just say the TodayTix lottery for this production is AWFUL!!! You don't get notified til at least 15.30 - which pretty much counts out anyone living outside of London, or more than half hour train ride away. AND have to sort out a Latty Flow in the meantime! FFS!
Other TT lotteries, you would usually get notified by around 10am of your success!

This is the best production of Cabaret i have seen. I thought it was phenomenal.
Yes i have some questions and quibbles about the staging, but i thought it was so far removed fromn the film and other stage productions, that it created its own world.
Both Redmayne and Buckley were excellent and i think they will win the Oliviers. This is the first time i have thought that Cliff wasnt a drip and thought Omari Douglas was well cast.
1 question. In other performances, did they use cordless mics during 1 or 2 songs?? Becuase that didnt fit into the show or era.
The back row of the Upper Circle is VERY high (your sat higher than the lighting rig!) And steep, but the barrier in front is high and solid and helps with vertigo alot! The theatre redesign needs some SERIOUS signage. So many people got lost trying to get there and even the staff werent certain how to get up there. But surprisingly the view is excellent and the legroom is excellent, (though not quite Barbican level of excellence)
I have tickets for January in stalls and i cant wait to see it again.

I doubt it’s as confusing as the Barbican - that layout is chaotic with doors that nobody would notice withiut being told they are there. |

The Barbican is home to many different venues and galleries. This is 1 small theatre and the new layout is baffling.

I paid £25 for the seats last night and £90 for the stalls seats in January, which i bought back in July. I thought they were expensive then, but now they seem like a bagain.

If there is a song that really needs the singer to stand and sing it, that's Cabaret. There are much more subtler ways to convey a breakdown than the three-act one-woman opera currently going on during the title number. Honestly, in the past three months I've seen so much stuff that was just too over-directed, and I don't know if it's because directors don't trust the material or simply think that the audience is a bunch of morons. "Cabaret" is a perfect showtune with a clearly delineated structure and evolution, you really do not need all that ACTING™️ to get the message through. I guess you didn't see Jane Horrocks in the Sam Mendes Donmar production. She made Jessie Buckley look positively mousey in comparison. |
