Jessie Buckley's name is currently being thrown around the producers mentioning a possible limited run return once Fra and Amy depart. Still no names for The Emcee. Rami Malek is a name Rami was just a dreamcasting idea in this thread.

Rami was just a dreamcasting idea in this thread. Rami definitely is not a name. He also has prior film commitments preventing him from future projects.

But if Jessie comes back, will she actually be able to deliver on the schedule? Or we will we end up back at the ‘is she on tonight or not?’ drama that audiences seeing the show in February and March faced?

Understudy Emily Benjamin on as Sally last night.
She was extremely good and if I hadn’t seen the signs I would ever have known.
I did a Last minute walk up as I had theatre tokens for use up and paid £70 for stage-side dress circle end of row k.
Not impressed with the view I got for my money - the orchestra restricted the view of the near side of the stage, and the action was directed towards the traditional audience side most of the time. I saw a lot of the back of people’s wigs, even when they were standing side-on, due to the curve of the seating.
Not all that impressed by the claim of ‘immersive’, either. Other than sending you in through the stage door and making you walk the long way around (no real club ever has an entrance like that) and a few vignettes performed in the bar before hand and during the interval it was a traditionally-staged production.
The production itself is very good, but then it’s hard to mess up Cabaret. I was struck by how tame it all was compared to past productions I’ve seen, though, with far less suggestively queer background action between dancers and no nudity. A can-can line done in shorts doesn’t quite convince me that the club is as risqué as it’s meant to be.

Very late to the CABARET party here; good preview tickets booked were cancelled due to Covid and then no availability for the first cast whom I was not so bothered about seeing. Rebooked (in not so good seats despite ATG promising to match them... grrr) for late September but another conflict meant they were exchanged (when I finally found a number for ATG) for last night in row C of the stalls. Very low expectations but have to admit it was really excellent! Must state that I hate having to queue to get into venues these days - it never used to happen did it? - and found the descent into the bowels of the "club" oppressive and rather ridiculous and the pre-show immersion I could have done without. The transformation of the auditorium has been very well done and I spent some time wondering quite how they achieved it. The two leads were incredibly impressive and it was rather nice not to be swayed by star or gimmick casting. In fact there really wasn't a weak link although I presume they cut "Why Can't I Wake Up?" for Cliff because he can't sing! The numbers were well staged even if the addition of "Mein Herr" was a little too full on coming straight after "Don't Tell Mama" which Ms Lennox delivered superbly. Some of the book scenes suffered due to the playing area. The band were also spot on. Great to be so pleasantly surprised. I do think the pricing is out of hand though but judging by last night's audience and the bottles of champagne being quaffed, people are prepared to pay the price!

I had a run-in with the security on Saturday night. Completely justified but also put a slight dampener on my evening.
We were stood in the Gold Bar before the show started (there was no pre show taking place at this point either) when I saw I had a message from my mum. Quickly replied “In the theatre, no phones allowed, speak later”. The security guard walked over to me and went “No photos allowed in here” so I replied “I know, I was texting my mum” and he replied “No you weren’t, I saw you taking a photo”. Now, at this point I’ve got the sticker on my phone so not sure how I could have even taken a photo. I didn’t want to get in an argument but he was getting quite stern in how he was talking and I really thought he was going to chuck me out. We went back and forth for I’d say 30 seconds or so when he uttered “I saw the gold on your photo, don’t lie to me”. At that point, I felt the need to pull out my phone to show him the text and, in fairness to him, he apologised straight away.
He did apologise as soon as he realised he’d made a mistake but I have to say, it’s still playing on my mind a few days later. Of course, in the main auditorium itself people were on their phones before the show started. But was I in the wrong for sending a short text in the bar beforehand? I am all for “keeping the secrets” but does that extend to a total phone ban in the pre-show areas?

Everybody and their cats have seen how the theatre looks like now, there were pics from the Playhouse circulating online from the very first previews. You did nothing wrong answering your mother.

That’s ridiculous! Obviously they make it clear that taking photos isn’t allowed, but there’s nothing about not being able to use your phone full stop!
And the security guy either wasn’t looking properly or needs re-training as there’s a noticeable difference in how someone holds their phone to type a message vs. taking a photo. I’m glad you showed him the message - I’d have done the same. And my camera roll to prove I’d not taken a photo. Sounds very (and unnecessarily) heavy-handed.

Loads of people using their phones to browse the internet when I went - including me! Which of course they want you to do for the at-seat refreshment ordering service, and is why they provide wifi!!
I did find the ‘sticker on the camera’ a bit heavy-handed. It was a bugger to clean off afterwards - I’m glad I’ve got a case with a recess for the lens, so I didn’t have to try and clean sticky residue off the actual lens.

Why Should I Wake Up hasn't been in the show for decades. It was in the last Bill Kenwright tour wasn't it? Okay this is my bad. I was under the impression that there were 3 versions of Cabaret you could license (1966, 1987 and 1998) but I thought that the only version really done anymore was the '98 Broadway revival version (which is what this production uses) since that was the most up to date version of the show and obviously the most popular considering how long it ran. But I guess because of that very reason it wasn't actually licensable for a long time so in the meantime I guess other productions might have included Why Should I Wake Up. Cabaret has so many versions it's hard to keep track haha. Still though, that song wasn't cut for this production in the sense that it should have been in the show but wasn't, this song list is a standard version of the show and it just doesn't include the song. That being said, I think somehow fitting it in would be nice since it has never sat right with me how little Cliff sings. I wouldn't have such an issue if he didn't sing at all because then it would feel like a purposeful choice, but the fact that he does sing a small amount but otherwise this character who is ostensibly the protagonist gets no song to themselves just feels a little odd.

New casting. Interesting, but not sure they’ll shift tickets.

Oh I don't know, push the marketing that they were in two of the biggest TV shows of recent memory (It's A Sin and Handmaids Tale) and you're onto a winner.
I can imagine Callum doing it too, so he's a great fit. I don't know Madeleine but I trust the casting team on this - they haven't got it wrong yet

Bit of a 'who' moment to be honest.
Not convinced they will engage the public enough to rush and book to shift tickets, if it had been olly Alexander it would likely be different. Being in a big show doesn't automatically equate to box office, it needs to be the right break out names from the right show to draw people in

Absolutely thrilled for Callum. I know him from She Loves Me at the Menier, he was excellent in it and the sweetest lad. And, of course, brilliant in It's A Sin. Definately going back to see this again now.

Yes, I saw it performed in the West End run of that tour as far back as 2012/13.

The Broadway '98 version has never been performed in this country.
The only production of Cabaret that's been around in the UK from 2006 until now was the Bill Kenwright/Rufus Norris version.

I’m actually very excited for Madeline and to see her in a role like this, so opposite from her “Handmaid” role.
