A little while back (early February last year) I was at the JW3 Centre in North London to see Stephen Schwartz do a talk. He was in London because of the opening of The Prince of Egypt and the subject of Hunchback came up and he mentioned that he was working with Disney on a project regarding this, but that was all he said.
He wanted to say more but had to stop himself as legally, he was unable too.
Bet you the live action remake is what it was about.

Given it's current state of disrepair because of the fire, and Covid, I daren't think that they'd film on location.
Either they'll go down the CGI route, or reconstruct the outside facade on a sound stage.
But visually, if this is done right, this could be stunning with views over the city and the Seine, the colours of the stained glass windows and in the topsy-turvy sequence and the falling confetti. Also, as Quasimado swings from a rope as he sings 'Out There', the bells themselves swinging, the fire as if flows over the parapets of the cathedral and when Quasimodo thows Frollo to his death.
It would be interesting to see if Esmeralda's goat, who was cut from the stage show (I believe) makes it to the live re-make.
Also how the three gargoyles are designed.

The gargoyles aren't really in the stage version though are they (I've not seen it but my understanding is that the gargoyles as characters were replaced by a chorus of statues)? I hope they don't have any comedic relief gargoyles anyway, they're the worst part of the film and totally destroy the tone. It sounds like all they need to do is adapt the stage show to screen and clean things up a bit and fix a few clunky lyrics but so far the trend with these remakes has been to completely ignore the existence of the stage versions and do any changes to the original from scratch, replacing perfectly fine songs added for stage with completely new inferior ones, presumably to try to get that Best Original Song Oscar.

The 1999 German production was very dark and gothic, going back to the original book story rather than the Disney film version, they even killed off Esmeralda at the end, But ultimately it was too dark for Disney and that version was never allowed again, though i believe the most recent European version was still advertised as not suitable for kids under 13. The Disney film is hugely under rated. Hellfire/Heavens Light is some of the best tunes from a Disney film.

There's the Top Tier of Disney that everyone knows and even non-MT people recognise the songs from (The Lion King, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast), and then there's the next tier down that sometimes get forgotten about but are just as brilliant, and for me Hunchback sits in that, along with Hercules and Mulan. |

Anything with a fat crocodile playing a trombone is good in my book. I'll throw Anastasia in the pile as well, some lovely songs in that too. When do we start dream-casting this? Please for once can we get people who can sing without the need for autotune? They'll have to go some way to beat Michael Arden on the cast recording, he's phenomenal. |

Samantha Barks would be a wonderful Esmeralda. She'd be a hot Disney ticket with her upcoming Elsa run in London.
No idea on Quasi though. They need someone age-appropriate, he's only supposed to be 20!

I imagine all the Roma characters will be cast with people belonging to that ethnicity to avoid any controversy (especially since I doubt many people could name a single actor belonging to the group - perhaps more than any other instance it would be especially poor to take away the opportunity from this minority group since they are pretty much non-existent in film, especially in leading roles).

I watched the La Jolla Playhouse production last night on YT (very well filmed) with Michael Arden and Patrick Page.
My issue with this version is that there is too much narration. We're told what happens, instead of showing us. That style works with the direction used, with the cast moving benches and railings to show different places, Thankfully no gargoyles.
The score is fantastic though. Made of Stone is a great 11 o'clock number and i really hope it makes it into the live action version.

Today I walked past the Grand Opera House and rather excitedly (frustrating if truth be told) a semi-professional production of this is being staged from Mar 7- 11 March.

I imagine all the Roma characters will be cast with people belonging to that ethnicity to avoid any controversy (especially since I doubt many people could name a single actor belonging to the group - perhaps more than any other instance it would be especially poor to take away the opportunity from this minority group since they are pretty much non-existent in film, especially in leading roles). Roma people are Indian people mixed with caucasian/aryan people. It is a group that often chooses to live a gypsy lifestyle. What they speak is Romani, which is also an Indian-Aryan language. When it comes to casting, they will either look at Indian, mixed or aryan actors if they want to be historically accurate, or at all races when it doesn't matter (fictional character). The group or lifestyle or choices should have nothing to do with casting. Just as it shouldn't be with any other role or project. I think this has the potential to be a wonderful film, if they embrace the music and artform. |
