It is a shame though. Yeah, I think broadcasting the Sunset material on screen (as opposed to performing it on stage but no film recording) means having to find workarounds Paramount's rights, which may only extend to N. America. It's partly why getting the show on film has taken so long; I would assume Paramount would end up being a co-producer of any film that is made and having a cut of the box office receipts. |

So pleased were at least getting to see a version of this from home. Just looked at booking tickets and im not sure who they got to write the synopsis but I'm pretty sure the whole show doesnt span over 1 day

Well now I'm a bit excited! Great to see how the curve looks in it's 'socially distanced' layout.
Maybe not the best performance, but with more time to warm up, rehearse and get a feel for the space this will be epic on screen.
I think there's going to be something beautifully tragic about watching Norma's decent into mental chaos in the startlingly relevant environment of an empty auditorium.

It's a shame that Sunset will not see a live audience, and I will always wonder what that would have been like because this filmed version is not going to be the same as that was going to be, new plans for this film version to take advantage of it's new form, but the good news is the new auditorium will still be used for live performances for three other shows in the new year including The Color Purple. Here it is in all it's glory.  |

Sadly they have just announced that they will remain closed in through to the end of Jan now so unfortunately so two of those 3 shows i mentioned have now been cancelled! Hopefully The Color Purple will still happen in March and this in the round (square) space can still get some use! At least the Sunset stream will show it off.

Seen some clips of the orchestra and I really do think this is ALW's best work. Granted I've not heard all of it but from the shows I've seen this is the score that gets me along with some songs in Phantom. When you have a big orchestra playing things like With One Look and Sunset Boulevard there is nothing like it. I'm only sad not to be able to experience it in person. I will never forgot the first time I saw the show and heard it, it was one of the lushest things I'd ever heard and gave me chills.

Sunset is my favourite show...I can see my seats on the right of the picture 😔
I first saw it with Betty Buckley in London twice, then New York, thought Faith and the first UK tour was poor and a watered down version (understandable but still) then Glenn at the Coliseum, finally caught the Curve production in Newcastle and remember thinking this is the best version I am going to see unless there is a big new production in London or New York

It is a fabulous score. Every time I listen to it I imagine it on film, which given the subject means he succeeded.
The orchestra at the ENO was mind blowing and I’ll never forget it. Never.

So are they going to have to do this with the dreaded social distancing in place, or have the cast had onsite (or equivalent) testing like some other major live stream events? e.g. Kylie Minogue and Dua Lipa's online concerts where no distancing was in place......

Really looking fwd to this tonight.
On a related matter, I bought a ticket for the pre show talk at 6pm on Weds 6th Jan which was 30 quid. Assumed this included the show but e-mailed Curve to check and it doesn't.
Show itself is only 20 quid.
Is it just me or is 30 for a talk half the length of the show a bit steep?
Will get the show too for that night so that's 50 quid!

Interval for the first stream and WOW
This is everything I’ve wanted theatres to do with streaming for years!
Sheer brilliance. Not a normal recording of a performance on stage. The cameras are completely embraced and the Curve makes such an interestingly unique setting for this.
Everyone needs to see this.

This was glorious. Took me a while to get into Danny Mac but I was won over about half-way through Act 1. Great to see Ria Jones again: what a delicious powerhouse. Loved it and for me that final staircase scene was epic.
Very impressed at it all being done, and with such style. Well done all round.

Could have done without seeing any cameramen. I don’t think it added anything but distraction. Show the guy filming her staircase descent as there is a cameraman for that.
Otherwise only real complaints relate to Joe. Firstly, it’s not fair that someone as handsome as Danny Mac is also bloody talented. And why wasn’t he shirtless for the title song?!
Was so much more interesting that a plain on stage recording. Liked Joe’s “room above the garage” being up in the flies.

Well this was absolutely sensational.
Insanely theatrical and the way they used the entire auditorium, wings, flys, was just inspired.
In terms of the physical space they'd created, although there is no substitute for seeing things live, this actually lent itself better if anything to film.
Tinged of course with the sadness of seeing seats that should be full with an audience used instead as a set.
And as ever the score with the David Cullen/ALW orchestrations sounded sublime
Top 3 of the year for me, with the OAT JCS and Hope Mill Rent.

That score! Still gets me.
I loved that they integrated the projections from the tour into the storytelling.
Embracing the environment by making the theatre the set and incorporating the medium of film into the subtext by not hiding any of the camerawork really set this piece off. Brechtian in its influence, they didn't try to obscure or mute the fact that they were filming in an empty auditorium and this echoed the plight of Norma's rejection from her audience.
Will definitely be tuning in a few more times over the next few weeks.
