I do wonder what Angela Lansbury and Imelda Staunton would have been like in this role? Personally, I think they both would have been great. I’ve never seen Lansbury live, but I have seen Staunton. I actually think Staunton is a better actress and singer than Glenn Close and I think she would make a magnificent Norma.

Saw it last night in Birmingham about 3/4 full maybe think some cast had family in some whooping screaming and yelling at in opportune moments .... all in all enjoyable which for me was disappointing as it’s one of my all time faves too .... saw West End show 5 times the faith b tour ... the tiny but excellent crh production with the fabulous Katherine evens .... and Glenn close last year .who when I saw her was amazing .. I can see what people were saying about the car chase etc for me I’d have preferred what they did in ENO 2 guys running around in the dark carrying headlights .... much more effective .... Norma’s costumes yuk ! Pretty good staging and lighting .... Danny Mac was ok at best .... very disappointed in Ria sadly ... she struggled esp with higher register maybe the matinee strained her voice ? But got very irritating which was a shame ...... the saving grace was the orchestra hearing the wonderful score .... and the guy playing max .... head and shoulders above everyone else a true class act ..... sublime ...... rest of my family who had never seen it loved it .... so as I say my own personal thoughts ..... glad I only paid £18 with travel zoo

Based on that clip not for me. Good voice but acting wise its a bit too stereotypical musical theatre

Indeed. For me La Evans was far and away in the top 3 all time Norma's. Absolutely amazing.

I really enjoyed this clip, thanks for posting, a great performance, yes musical theatre (not meant in any derogatory way). I think Ria Jones is tremendous in the current tour and can’t wait to see her again. I hadn’t realised Kathryn Evans is married to Peter Purves . But I can’t help thinking , there’s a brilliant casting idea for Norma Desmond .... Paul O’Grady ! What’s his singing like?

Was able to find a few Youtube clips of the UK tour after seeing the Evans one last night (am I the only one who when they click one of these posts to see what someone else shares ends up on youtube for at least another hour watching other Sunset clips?)
Anyway - it looks like the curve production is really unique. It's cool to see another staging and from the small clip I saw, Ria sounds phenomenal. Curious though, when it ends is there anything on the screens like there was in the ENO produciton?
(As for Evans, she has a tremendous voice, but that whole small production/actors playing instruments thing to me doesn't work with this... I know ALW heaped praise on it when it opened, but the fact that the follow up had a 50 piece orchestra says it all)

Saw this in Birmingham on Saturday and absolutely loved it. not a weak cast member among them and the band was brilliant. So lovely to see a lot of the audience staying behind to listen to the play out rather than rushing off home

I don't really think that captures it very well truth be told. But they did use one of the best moments/songs to focus on. That scene looks even more beautiful in real life.

The trailer left me feeling a bit flat - this is my favourite ALW score, but it doesn't look like it's been done particularly well. I also wasn't particularly impressed with Ria, who seems a bit average? I'm only judging from that as I've not had the opportunity to see the tour yet - though I definitely will

I'm only judging from that as I've not had the opportunity to see the tour yet - though I definitely will I'd have to agree with you to an extent. I've seen the show already and the trailer doesn't really do it justice. In fact it seems a bit half-hearted, it's almost like they just filmed her singing one song and chucked a few clips in to liven it up. Don't let it put you off seeing it. If you're a fan of the score then it's worth going just to hear the orchestra playing it.

I saw this recently and found it disappointing. The score has some great moments but overall, the production fell a bit flat for me.
Ria Jones has a terrific voice but I felt the characterisation strayed into pantomime at times. There was inappropriate laughter at times and overall, I didn't find any of the characters to be particularly sympathetic- with the result that I wasn't really invested in what happened to them. It's a good story but the execution felt a bit hammy.
Danny Mac is very talented and easy on the eye.
On the positive side, the production itself was gorgeous to look at and nicely put together. Nice to have a full orchestra.
