I was wondering does Ria even have an understudy? I've never heard of her going on.

That’s all in the past... Are you quite sure that this isn’t Barbra Streisand doing a Marilyn Monroe impression? I think I may have thought that at the time...

I have a feeling Faith Brown “channelled” Barbra when she sang, either intentionally or not.
Someone who definitely did that was Sheena Easton, from the parish of 42nd St. I distinctly remember in that Big Time programme that launched Sheena, she said she had every BS record and spent hours singing along to make sure she could hit every note in Bab’s range. I can deffo hear a hint of Babs in Sheena voice.

I was taking notice in Liverpool the other week and didn’t see anyone who I thought looked viable though. There are a couple of guys who could potentially step up for Danny Mac but I think Max would present a problem too.

Carl Sanderson (normally plays DeMile) was on as Max in Liverpool on the Tuesday performance and was great!

I don't know where you were sat at the Empire, but up close, there is one female ensemble member who is clearly the Norma understudy as she's a few years older than the rest of the female ensemble.

I'm going to the Thursday matinee in Wimbledon and I've noticed that it's a double Wednesday-double Thursday week as opposed to a Monday evening performance. Just checking there's no chance Ria will miss a matinee because of this is there? I wouldn't have thought so, she seems to have been an absolute trooper so far on tour but just checking!

She makes the most of her time off from what I’ve seen on twitter. She spent Christmas in her apartment in Paris and appears to be in Trieste at the moment. #slummingit

Unless of course you knew this and I misread the post about time off!

Are these dates in April the last for the UK tour? I believe the tour finishes in Sheffield on 28 April. Well worth checking out if you haven't been yet!

Caught the matinee today in Wimbledon and really enjoyed it. Danny Mac surpassed my expectations. Ria sings better than Glenn Close, but her acting isn't as nuanced.
A really enjoyable afternoon.

I agree with foxa, especially regarding Danny Mac. I thoroughly enjoyed today's matinee at Wimbledon, but then Wimbledon has rarely disappointed me with its touring musicals, despite what some other people think about the venue!

I seem to be the third Theatreboard member at Wimbledon this afternoon. I agree totally with what has been said. Danny Mac really looks the part, as well as sounding great. Yes, Ria is a better singer than Glenn, but lacks the charisma - notwithstanding this, she gave a great performance. However, I did keep getting shades of La Paige along the way ..... A word about Adam Pearce as Max - his voice was a revelation to me.
Oh, and I like Wimbledon!

I was there this evening. Danny Mac surpassed my expectations and i thought he was very good indeed. He can definitely lead a show. I thought Ria was good, but certainly not the best Norma i've seen. I don't know wether its getting towards the end of the tour, a 2 show day, but i was expecting her voice to be stronger. She had power in the big notes, but it seemed she had to push to get there. Betty was a bit bland for me, i couldn't see what people would see in her. I'd like her to be a bit more sassy and street smart, rather than the girl next door. Too Much In Love... seemed pretty fast too.
I liked the set. I thought it was well done with the exception of the 2 cars... I get that they were going for a film prop type of look, but it made no sense that they were they only thing done that way. I also liked the projections and didn't think they were overused.
Every Movie's A Circus is still a poor replacement for Let's Have Lunch.
I was surprised at how empty the rear stalls were at tonights performance. Was there a senior citizen discount tonight?? it was a much older crowd tonight

I also thoroughly enjoyed the matinée on Wednesday, apart from woman behind me talking all the way through the beginning music after the interval.

...Too Much In Love... seemed pretty fast too... I think by that point the orchestra are like "f%ck it nearly pub time lets rattle through this one."

I too noticed that the tempo was extremely fast for Too Much In Love To Care. Strange.
Overall I enjoyed this on Tuesday night. Ria Jones was just ok for me but nothing special. Danny Mac was the real surprise, his Joe Gillis was really good. The ensemble did a decent enough job.
Few things I didn't like:
- The Lady is Paying number was completely flat, not funny at all.
- When Norma arrives at Paramount a young guard doesn't know who she is and refuses to open the gates. Then she calls Jonesy, an old guard who remembers her because he was working at the studios when Norma was a big star. Jonesy is played by a very young man and it's difficult to believe he knew Norma for more than twenty years prior to this scene.
- Cecil B de Mille was bold at the time Sunset Boulevard is set but for some bizarre reason in this production he has lots of hair.
Maybe I'm just being too picky. I did enjoy it very much though
