Absolutely screams Theatre Royal, Haymarket to me. No inside knowledge or anything, pure speculation but a hunch! The Haymarket is not really suitable for musicals unless they've been designed for it in mind like Only Fools. The only theatre I see being free is The Dominion and that's a hard theatre to fill.

Have you ever set foot in that theatre? Assuming you haven’t because it’s SO wildly unsuitable as a venue. Not only the small stage, but it’s raked and they won’t have enough seats to make the numbers work. Apart from that it’s perfect 😂

It's unlikely since they have a backlog of productions but would the Olivier be an option for South Pacific for next summer? I think if the National wants something that puts bums on seats and make a bit of dosh then this could work.

That sounds very unlikely

Would a limited run at ENO work as their Summer musical? Or is the whole point of that recent tradition that it's their in-house produced money maker?
Or, could the National Theatre take it, to cut short whatever lacklustre thing has flopped? Or The Bridge? (same logic)

(same logic) Coliseum is meant to be doing My Fair Lady next summer so doubt it would be there. Does the NT do other productions or do they tend to keep it in house and do their own.

NT has been co-producing with out-of-London venues, or bringing things in after they've been a success elsewhere e.g. Jane Eyre, and Peter Pan.

I had hopes that the NT (or otherwise) would bring back Hadestown. I had thought pre-2020 there were plans.

If they thought SP was popular enough to sustain a 3 month run they would go for it.

Well the Olivier would be perfect for it and its a better production than Trevor Nunn's.

I think the NT should try to do their own, new productions insted of bringing out-of-town shows and revivals (like Hadestown or War Horse again) to the Olivier. But that's just my opinion.

We won’t see the national staging musicals like this ever again. There’s too much box ticking they have to do now.

Standing At The Sky’s Edge is still planned as well isn’t it?

Yes but what I think mrbarnaby means is we won't get big revivals of R&H again (at least not for a while). Hex and Standing At The Sky's Edge are hardly Follies or South Pacific

I agree with Mr B on this occasion. The National work very hard for all their grants and funding and that sweet dolla is entirely dependent on their programme being "diverse".
I am all for theatre "with a message" but they are very try-hard about it. In short, the days of their outstanding My Fair Lady et al are gone. What we might get is a modern day update of Pygmalion which somehow tenuously ties into the BLM movement and is set at a Pride festival.

I'm coming to the conclusion that I generally prefer listening to the scores of many of the "classic" musicals rather than watching them staged, as I was thoroughly bored by this.
The book is not good, the whole story is disjointed and it makes for an interminable first act. I found all the ensemble numbers more shouted and shrill than sung pleasantly, and Julian Ovenden's voice didn't suit the overall feel of this production at all (although at least Some Enchanted Evening woke the audience up). Alex Young is good but I didn't believe Nellie falling in love with Emile. Bloody Mary was jarring and annoying in equal parts. Rob Houchen was the bright spot but his character is so predictable.
The revolve was used too much for me, it was dizzying. And it was a bit distracting watching the cast put masks on every time they had to walk through the audience, which was a lot (though full marks for safety).
I have such fond memories of previous trips to Chichester to see the brilliant Gypsy and Guys & Dolls, but this one missed the mark for me sadly.

This was a disappointment. I have to agree with the previous poster in that Ms Beck's pregnancy is a distraction and hampers the somewhat over-enthusiastic performance. Having read several reviews, I'm surprised none of the reviewers mentioned that. When the production pictures were released I was surprised at quite how obviously pregnant she is. It's made me reconsider whether to buy a ticket for the streaming, as I think I will find it pretty distracting given the character is very clearly not supposed to be pregnant. I think they would be worried about getting slated for mentioning it. We all steer so clear of offending these days.
But yes, it was distracting, and wasn't she also a little too old to play Nellie - someone in her early 20's. I found the comment about the age gap with Emile quite silly, when they clearly look a similar age!

I ended up not watching the streaming, as I didn't think I'd be able to get past her being visibly pregnant, so can't really comment on the age gap or lack of. Though didn't Glen Close play Nellie on film when over 50 so compared to that...!

I agree. A stunning revival. A shame it won’t be back on the Chichester stage though. It was wonderful there.
