Ok..I acknowledge your view, i feel we will have to agree to disagree and being totally adult about this, I would just finally mention John Kerr had the acting ability of a bookshelf and his singing voice was dubbed 🤗

Edward Baker Duly who played Cable in the Trevor Nunn production opposite Philip Quast sang the role well and was physically quite impressive, but he was still the least interesting character on stage. It's a difficult role to really make an impact with.

Trying to think of a more talented and underrated West End pairing in history than Gina Beck and Julian Ovenden. Both British, both fantastic performers with nary a controversy in sight, two of the best voices in musical theatre anywhere in the world.
Add the likes of Jo Ampil completely reinventing Bloody Mary and it is one of the strongest casts I can ever remember seeing.

TodayTix have a sale on at the moment and South Pacific is in that - I’ve just got row H of the stalls for tomorrow night (Sat) for £40, rather than £90 on the Sadler’s Wells’ website! I decided to go after seeing the enthusiastic posts on here from members who’ve seen it earlier this week and in Manchester so I’m very much looking forward to seeing another classic musical that I’ve never seen before (following my trip to My Fair Lady in May). |

Well I got to see Julina, and Jo and Rob too, and I’m so glad I went. What a wonderful show! All four leads had beautiful voices - Julian’s This Nearly Was Mine was a real stand out (who knew the guy could sing like that?!) but Gina was great too, and it was wonderful to finally see Rob in a show - again, what a voice. Couldn’t help but think how brilliant he’d have been as Marius and how sad I am not to have seen him play that part.
I really enjoyed the show, and as I went in fairly blind, the story hit hard where it needed to. Although it was written so long ago, the racism storyline is just as relevant today sadly.
Had a great seat in row H - lovely rake so a perfect clear view and just right to appreciate the ensemble numbers. Such a shame that it seems to be struggling to sell in London despite the rave reviews for this production and it being a short run. Hopefully press night this week will generate some more bookings.
Also - is it Rob How-chen or Who-chen? Been bugging for me ages that I don’t know!

Love Theatre has discounts on some of the Sunday 4pm shows, which I've not seen elsewhere. Better for us travelling down from Norwich!

I went to see this yesterday afternoon- not usually my thing musicals but decided to make an exception for this, having read the great reviews. Really liked it! I had no idea Julian Ovenden (which I had seen in normal tv stuff) could sing like that. {Spoiler - click to view}
Not even knowing the story beforehand meant that I got a bit of a shock when at the end of the first act, that main love interest Nellie turns out to be a racist. Felt terrible.
There is so much to unpick in this story- the young Polynesian girl was meant to be 13 (!!!) in the book? The French man is portrayed as a likeable character but even him is not entirely blameless, as he owns a plantation (and he killed someone). I sort of wished he'd be put off by Nellie's racism, but no- he still wants to marry her. Overall a very good afternoon even if my seat was a high stool on the side of the second circle. I had to lean forward a bit but for £15 it wasn't too bad, and at least it was closer to the performers than some more comfortable & expensive seats. |

I love that fact that a couple of people have mentioned they didn't know Julian Ovenden could sing.
To me I think of him as a singer before I think of him being on TV.
He has done so many musicals over the years.
I think the first time I saw him was a Sondheim at the Donmar.
His voice is stunning.
I think it must be an age thing as his TV work is more recent but he has been around in musicals for years.

He was absolutely lovely in Finding Neverland and Marguerite too.
I know he’s a touch on the short side for the roles, but I’d pay full price to see him as The Phantom or Jean Valjean (or Javert, he’d absolutely smash both). But particularly The Phantom.
Can you imagine the upgrade?!!
While I’m dreaming, get Gina Beck back as Christine to reunite Julina.

I was only really aware of him from being in Downton, then when he released an album a few years ago I assumed it was because he could sing a bit and was capitalising on the Downton profile. I saw him in All About Eve and met him at stage door (swoon) but of course that wasn’t a singing role. Now I find he’s actually been in loads of musicals (and some other quite high profile TV roles too). Then hearing him sing on Sat I realised I was completely wrong - his performance of This Nearly Was Mine was incredible. I’m definitely a convert! Found his album with Sierra Boggess on Spotify yesterday and enjoyed that too. I could see him playing either Valjean or Phantom at some point if the producers ever go down the casting a name route. |
