but I’d pay full price to see him as The Phantom or Jean Valjean (or Javert, he’d absolutely smash both). But particularly The Phantom. Can you imagine the upgrade?!! Haha, I was just writing my post above saying the same! He’d be wonderful in any of those roles.

That’s the brilliant bit, I’m not sure he’s even a “name”! I mean, he’s relatively known but he’s not an above the title star.
The problem is from watching interviews and such with him, frankly they don’t seem his kind of thing. I don’t think he wants to do that stuff. Surely he has been courted before now?

If I were Julian Ovenden I wouldn’t be in the slightest but interested in either Les Mis or Phantom. Why put yourself up for comparison with 30 years worth of other actors? He doesn’t need to. And apart from that when it comes to how Les Mis is being cast these days he’s probably too old.

I think he is happy with TV/films and then dipping in and out of musicals. Doubt he would want to commit to a lengthy run.
I was at John Wilson Oklahoma Proms a few years ago and he sat right in front of me with his wife and his 2 children. They were the most well behaved kids I have ever seen in the theatre. I kept thinking how good he would have been in Oklahoma.

Thinking about it, you could put him in so many shows and I can imagine him being perfect in any of them.
Mack & Mabel - Mack Sennett (with Gina Beck) 42nd Street - Julian Marsh Chicago - Billy Flynn
I could go on and on!

Billy Flynn's not much of a stretch. He tends to go for more interesting characters. Having played the leads in Grand Hotel and Death Takes a Holiday i'd love to see him play Guido Contini in Maury Yeston's Nine, and I'm sure there's a Sweeny Todd in there somewhere.

He was absolutely lovely in Finding Neverland and Marguerite too. I know he’s a touch on the short side for the roles, but I’d pay full price to see him as The Phantom or Jean Valjean (or Javert, he’d absolutely smash both). But particularly The Phantom. Can you imagine the upgrade?!! While I’m dreaming, get Gina Beck back as Christine to reunite Julina. Take. My. Money. When I met him at stage door in Manchester a few weeks ago, a woman next to me told him he'd make a lovely Phantom and he just laughed

Trying to decide on seat for this but seat plan site seems to be a bit sparse on seat reviews for this theatre. Generally picking up that the stalls are the only place for any decent leg room and row C back to get the benefit of the rake, which most say is good and will allow for clear view. Only odd thing most reviews with photos make the stage seem far away even if the seats are a few rows back. Reviews of the actual seats seem positive and one people don't feel wedged into so hopefully when I finally decide it will be ok.

Only odd thing most reviews with photos make the stage seem far away even if the seats are a few rows back. The stage IS kind of far away I noticed. Even if you have a front row seat in the stalls, you aren't that close because of the orchestra in the middle. My seat was really uncomfortable as on a stool on the side up on second circle, but I always pick closeness to the action as opposed to frontal view but far away. For this reason I decided to stay in my uncomfortable stool despite many empty seats in the second circle. Three people next to me did not agree and moved to a more frontal chair as soon as they could...

I’d say anywhere in centre stalls from D back to about J would give a good view, and the rake is very good!

Do we know who the understudies are? From the programme: Charlotte Scott for Nellie Forbush, Stephen John Davis for Emile and Rachel Jayne Picar for Bloody Mary.

Thanks for the information on seats, good to hear the rake is better than some seat plan reviews had said. Of course now I know where to sit the love theatre special deal gets removed mid afternoon today and today tickets offer does not cover the last two weeks yet. Still plenty of seats about so hopefully something will pop back up

Stephen John Davis previously understudied Emile in the UK tour of the Lincoln Centre production, I saw him covering Matt Cammelle I believe and he was quite good. Prior to that he covered The Phantom and Javert in town, both of which I saw him do - so if you do see him for any reason I guarantee that you’ll be in safe hands. Plus you would have an excuse to go back again and see Ovenden.

As wonderful as it was in Chichester. The four leads are sublime, the vocals are quite stunning. Wouldn’t be surprised to see four acting nominees (and potentially a win or two) at the Oliviers.

Ovendon and Beck deserve to win Oliviers for this. Who are the other 2? R Houchon and J Ampill? They aren’t award worthy roles IMO
