Saw this tonight at the Everyman cinema with complimentary mulled wine and mince pies !!
Have to say as worried as loved it on Broadway !! But it’s just a brilliant adaptation with a cracking cast and wears its heart on its sleeve ! And was great to see and hear it on a big screen !! It’s on all this weekend in Everyman cinemas ! So treat yourself x I sobbed !

Apologies if there is an existing thread but for those of you who may not be aware, it is screening in selected cinemas across the UK before it's Netfiks launch.
I just got back from a screening.
In a word (and it's not a word that I use often) fabulous!
A full review to follow ASAP but for now, again, fabulous!

Been listening to the music all weekend. Really like it and looking forward to seeing it on Netflix. Probably what we need at the moment, a bit of fluffy fun.

Already planning to order a takeaway, open a bottle of wine and enjoy this on Friday night.
From the trailer, James Corden looks dreadful, but I love Andrew Rannells and Ariana DeBose so hopefully they and the others make up for Corden's miscasting!

Saw it yesterday and it's utterly brilliant.
Yes, James Corden is really problematic and he should not have been cast, but by the time he reached Barry's Going To The Prom I sort of forgave him. I still think they should have cast Brooks and then got a name for Trent (Andrew was good but not astounding). Loved Nicole, Meryl is great. Ariana DeBose and Jo Ellen Pellman are really wonderful. The final act plays out slightly different to the show for two characters and it was much more emotional to me. I really cried at Its Time To Dance - it's proper Broadway and just made me miss what our industry was at the beginning of the year.
Hope everyone enjoys it, and if it's a hit then maybe it'll be the greenlight for us to get a London run.

I loved this on Broadway, and was so happy when they announced the Netflix version, but my heart sank when I saw they'd cast Corden - and it sank even more when I realised he was playing Barry as it's such a lovely part and the bond this camp, older gay man manages to form with a teenage insecure girl is really wonderful to watch unfold. Going by all reviews so far, it looks like my suspicions were correct as he's apparently channeling a grotesque outdated stereotype and I'm worried it's going to really distract from the heart of the show. I'm glad the rest of it more than makes up for that, but it's such a shame one very bad misstep in casting seems to be preventing this from getting the glowing reviews it deserves.

Honestly, at this point just seeing Corden's name attached to something puts me off. I'm sure there was someone better they could have used.

I was really worried about James corden. Really worried. But he won me over. I’m straight so can’t be personally offended by a straight man playing gay but ignoring any politics like that I loved his performance.

Saw this on Broadway, should never have closed as early as it did, as it was brilliant, Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin book is hilarious, with an excellent score by Chad Beguelin and Matthew Sklar score is an hoot.
Is this just playing Everyman Cinemas?

I’m straight so can’t be personally offended by a straight man playing gay but ignoring any politics like that I loved his performance. I'm gay, and I don't know as I found him offensive, but I was certainly irritated and a bit tired by him by the first half hour or so. I really did forgive him by the last third though. What they should have done is cast Brooks Ashkmanses, and then stunt cast Trent and then none of us would be even needing to have this conversation.

So a straight man is playing a gay man..So what? Get over it. People say its pure sterotype. Well that's how its written. The breakdown for the part is tagged as camp, flamboyant, over the top. And a gay guy being camp, flamboyant and over the top is still stereotypical. Alot of the reviews used the phrase 'gayface' which annoys the hell out of me... Its very much a phrase for the woke generation. If straight can only play straight and gay only play gay, then we're going backwards not forwards.
Ryan Murphy has done more than anyone to push LGBTQ+ casting in nearly everything hes done and then gets flack for this?
Brooks Ashmanskas and James Corden are a similar build, can tall skinny guys not play the part either?? Complete Nonsense.
And before people say that James is just talentless, thats not quite true either.
just my opinion...

That's a fine opinion to have (you are as entitled to it as much as anyone else) but I don't think we are going backwards.
Yes Brooks and James look similar physically, but Brooks played the part perfectly. He played all the laughs, but also got all of the heart. Corden spends the first half of the film trying to find how to land the laughs and it just doesn't work for a big portion of the film. I don't find James talentless - I thought he was good in Into The Woods and superb in One Man Two Guvnors. The bottom line here is he is just miscast. I don't blame him for that either - I think I blame Ryan Murphy. and the reason he's getting the flack is because he does push LGBTQ casting, but didn't do it in a show where one of the main characters sexuality is one of the central plot points.
Again, it's just my opinion. Overall I find the criticisms valid, but I don't think it's as bad as some of the reviews have said.

My reaction to him was based purely on overexposure and ‘oh, this again’ rather than a politicised one. It just isn’t a performance I need to see again. Stereotypes are a great device to get a point or a character across.

I'm very much looking forward to watching this tomorrow - I love the Broadway cast album. Regarding Corden's casting, I found this Guardian article very good for explaining why performances like the one he has reportedly given are distasteful or even offensive.

Firstly, please accept my apologies for my delay in posting this.
I will try my best not too give too much of the actual plot away.
I knew the basic storyline and one or two of the songs so going in with minimal knowledge, I LOVED it!
First of all the the cast are, each in their own way, outstanding.
Meryl performs a song called 'It's Not About Me'- of course it is. Watch for her Eva Peron reference.
Personally I didn't have a problem with James Corden- but each to your own. For a big boy, he's so quick and nimble on his feet
(Basically) Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells are supporting characters- that said, each get a whole song to sing- Nicole sings a song called Zazz- a very Fosseque routine and Andrew sings a song called Love Thy Neighbour set in a shopping mall.
It's like Glee!, but turned up a notch!
Nicole Kidman is so tall! In fact there is a reference to her 'antelope legs'. Also look out for the regular references she makes to Tina Louise (of Gilligan's Isle fame) and Andrew Rannells makes regular references to the fact that his character attended Juliard School of Acting.
There is lots of glitter and sparkle. Choreography is slick and the vocals are very clear and strong, Each song is 'sold'
It's great to see such diversity in the ensemble.
There are also a lot of humorous throw away lines.
So I'm sitting there, foot tapping away and as if that all wasn't enough in the last 15-20 minutes of the film is Tracey Ullman appears, I LOVE Tracey Ullman in anything she does.
Maybe I'm just easily please but I really enjoyed it! There is character development and progress with a sensitive message about acceptance.
I believe this premieres on Netflix tomorrow?
I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.
Does anyone know if this eventually will be released on DVD?

Interesting that the Guardian film critic gave it 4*. I'm surprised Corden camped it up so much or was allowed to do so by Murphy. Certainly going to e worth watching, to make up my own mind - if I can make it the whole way through!

It was a lovely show, with some great songs. Methyl sounds fab on the recording, I’m just hoping JC doesn’t destroy it.

Just watching it now and I don’t think Corden is over the top or camp enough! All I keep thinking is I wish it was Brooks Ashmanskas or even Eric Stonestreet
And so far they have cut half the acceptance song and you happened!. Songs seem to get started and then they just cut.
