The show has never really done well on tour though has it? Wasn't there one a few years ago that ended early due to poor sales?
It's a show that does well in a big London revival with a big musical theatre star in the lead, but outside of the M25 it seems to fall a little flat.
And yes, bringing it back to the Barbican for a summer WITHOUT Sutton Foster, who was the cause of much excitement the first time around, seems a mistake. There are plenty of classic shows of a similar style that could be done and would capture the same sort of audience and excitement. Kristin Chenoweth in On the Twentieth Century perhaps? Some thing like that!

Struggling to see this do well without Sutton Foster personally. Kerry Ellis just isn't the same draw.

I do think that Foster's success in London has shown that there's a big Broadway fanbase in the UK who would love to see more Broadway stars bring their shows to London. Look at Jeremy Jordan in the Bonnie and Clyde concert too. But thank you!

Didn't know John Lahr was reviewing London productions (honestly, worth getting the free trial for this just to read the few reviews he's written). But he's a critic (one unlike others, isn't completely dazzled by Foster's technical merits) who got my sentiments on this production, and particularly why it failed to stir when televised. The Bright Side of Life "..An evening in danger of sinking Porter’s delicious wit under the story’s lame jocularity".
And on ALW Cinderella (Off-topic, but it's within the same article) : "Cinderella is mostly a torrent of unmemorable sound, a sort of Tower of Babble". "On the night I saw Cinderella, the audience gave it a standing ovation. If you’ll stand for that, you’ll stand for anything"

According to Carly Mercedes Dyer's Instagram, rehearsals for the tour are starting next week; on a post re Anything Goes, she said to George Beet and Natalie Chua (from last year's ensemble) that she would "see them next week to start it all over again". I wonder how many of the ensemble will be returning for the tour+summer run?

The more I think about this the more annoyed I get about the laziness of the programming at the Barbican. Yes, it was very well received last year - but why bring it back for (most likely) diminished returns?

I mean, realistically the WOS awards are voted for by the public and driven by social media. CHF has always had a big social media presence and a large young fanbase who would vote for her. She was always going to win because of that.
Anything Goes had a slightly older crowd who were not as engaged with social media and those who were younger were probably put off by the attempt to have Foster "cancelled" early last year.

So I'm very confused as to what's going on with UK tour dates. The tour website lists it as running in Dublin 18 - 28 May yet Canterbury's Marlowe Theatre says it's running 25 May - 4 June. I emailed the theatre asking if it was cancelled and they said it was still on. Are they magically doing the show in two places at once?! What is going on?
