I thought the whole thing felt rushed and chopped up - editing the songs to wedge them into the performance slot felt jarring, as did the abrupt change from musical to musical. It might have worked better without Mary Poppins (so, with just Phantom and Les Mis, there would have less editing of songs for length to be done) - MP would have worked better placed at the beginning of the broadcast on its own, with the MP cast joining everyone at the end for the last bit of One Day More.

wardrobemistress76 That was quick thank you! I thought it was Mary Poppins, and tried some of the tracks on Spotify, but I didn't click on that one as I thought "it's definitely not A Spoonful of Sugar."

Seen so many tweets saying Christine was miming. Even if she was I still really enjoyed it That song or at least the end portion is normally mimed in the show because of the staging. You mean the bit where they're stood still in the middle of the stage doing nothing?  To be pedantic, it's the first half of the song that's mimed normally due to the staging and cuts into live at "In all your fantasies...". If the full song is mimed its normally due to the effort and potential strain required for the end note. |

I think it’s fair comment... I felt the same, especially with the Les Mis section. Singing along in my head, I kept expecting the tune/lyrics to go one way and was then slightly disappointed when they didn’t. I totally understand why it was done that way, and I’m glad they were there at all, but it did dull the effect a bit. After all the low-rent BGT stuff, it was a shame they couldn’t spare a few more minutes for a full couple of songs by super-talented people! |

The Les Mis section, apart from the last phrase, was exactly the same as the version the film cast did at the Oscars in 2013 (minus the Hugh Jackman solo at the start). That was remixed so Oscar winner Anne Hathaway had a bit to sing in the medley so I guess they thought that was useful for another TV performance given Fantine would otherwise not be in it at all.

Can any expert name the leads ? Zizi Strallen as Mary Poppins. Charlie Stemp as Bert Poppins. Was Killian Donnely the Phantom ? Michael Ball as Javert. Carrie Fletcher as Fantine. John Owen Jones as Jon Val Jean. Killian was the phantom, someone said Holly wasn't 100% hence why the last bit was mimed but who knows. It was lovely to see musical theatre back on our tv!! |
