Well that must have gone right over my head as I didn't see or hear anything to imply Pickering was gay.
Maybe I was too busy listening to the lovely music.

It's a little progressive for 1956. If it was intended as a reference to homosexuality back then (and I doubt it was, I think Dawnstar’s suggestion is more likely) it would have gone way over most people’s heads, not to mention implying that Pickering was a sexual deviant as far as attitudes at the time were concerned. Why would anyone think it was a good idea to put that in their film? |

Vanessa Redgrave was out tonight (Weds) if anyone is tracking these things; her understudy Heather Jackson filled in and got applause from the cast at the bows. Very much a curate's egg of a production but luckily the two leads (Amara and Harry) are in peak form and deserve the ovation they received from the crowd. The less said about the Freddy the better - egads !

My visit to the Coliseum tonight reminded me why I love TodayTix and their rush tickets so much. I would have felt stung paying £90 for the stalls seat for this. It was my first visit to the Coliseum and did like it as a venue. The stalls has a lovely rake and even right at the back felt close. The boxes seemed to provide a good view too.
As for the show I agree with most of what has been said already. It's a pity that it's in this venue as the sounds is wobbly (I did get used to it by half way through Act 1 though) The orchestrations are lovely played by the full ENO orchestra however it feels like they arrived at the venue, realised that it sounds awful, and just decided to turn the entire show down. Therefore it never fully soars when it needs to.
The two leads were excellent. Higgins felt like a mash of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper!
The touring set would have been fine on tour but in the West End I expect real books on shelves rather than painted backdrops. The house was the best set piece.
3 stars from me. Feels like it could have been 5 with just the problems above being sorted!

I booked a cheap balcony seat for £20 a while back. I had been kicking myself in the build-up to yesterday's evening performance for not just waiting for TodayTix to get a better seat for around the same price. Was therefore pleasantly surprised when I arrived and was told the balcony was closed! Got a nice upgrade to the dress circle instead and I think my seat would normally have been about £100. Definitely don't think it would have been worth that and like you I wasn't totally convinced by the sound, but I can't complain! |

I have never seen My Fair Lady before (not even the film) and did enjoy this last night.
Agree with Stephen above that it felt like they had turned the sound down and some bits which felt like they should be "moments" felt a bit underwhelming.
The cast was on good form, the only weak link for me was Stephen K Amos, his singing and acting were just OK.

Not sure why she was cast. She doesn't look well enough to perform in all the shows and billing her as performing must have encouraged some to book. |

Mrs Higgins is a weird fit for Vanessa for all sorts of reasons but maybe she thought it would be good to still be working. The role is all of about 10 minutes long (if that) but has scene-stealing potential in the right hands. (Diana Rigg got a Tony nomination for it in NY and was replaced by the legendary Rosemary Harris, who was then as now careering into her 90s.)

We saw this a couple of days ago. I liked it. It was nice. Bland words for how I found much of this show.
My Fair Lady has long been one of my favourite musicals ever, so I was worried this version wouldn't come up to expectations. I was waiting to be swirled up in the soaring orchestra strings - I wasn't. I wanted louder, and more. Amara and Harry H-P were ok, and Stephen K Amos wasn't as poor as I was expecting, having read reports earlier. Not struck on the actor playing Freddie either, but let's face it, Freddie is a wet lettuce anyway. The only part I really loved was the Ascot Gavotte. I was sitting in the Dress Circle, so most of the action looked as if it was set inside a box.
I bought tickets when there was a sale on one of the numerous sites, and was pleased I hadn't paid full whack. As I said, it was 'nice' - but my friend clearly enjoyed it more than I did, so there you are.

Almost positive they did approach her but she declined - I think it would have been really hard for someone who can no longer sing to share the stage every night with someone who is playing one of the greatest soprano roles ever, and to top it all off its a role SHE created - I know it'd be too much for me! |

Sadly I do agree with the comments about the sound level and the orchestra - I really enjoyed MFL, but with my only previous trip to a production with a big orchestra being Sunset Boulevard also at the Coliseum, I was hoping/expecting to be swept up in the stirring overture and orchestral moments during the show. Sadly that didn’t happen - either because it was too quiet, or because the score wasn’t as good, or a combination of the two factors.
It’s still a good show though and really pleased I had the chance to see it given its a classic musical and one I’d not seen before.
