Just watched the video of CANDIDE. Really first-rate...especially the Cunegonde of Ms Hall. All her high notes were spot on..and then to have to sing an "encore" at the end with another high D!! Loved Rosemary Ashe too. Highly recommended!!

I have just finished watching this and really enjoyed it. Great to hear a large orchestra performing too. Talented cast especially Mr Houchen who has a wonderful voice.
Nice to see no scores as usually concert versions tend to have the cast reading the score.
It's a very odd story so I think it works better fully staged and acted otherwise it doesn't make a lot of sense.
The only production I have seen was the Menier which I absolutely loved and was lucky enough to see it many times. The finale Make my garden grow is one of my favourite MT numbers.

I thought I knew most of the lyrical changes for this show. But this concert used material I don't recall from any of the recordings I own...(and that is 5 I think!)
Some of the trims were unfortunate particularly in the Auto da Fe sequence which was too truncated.
Houchen did well but did get lost in concerted numbers though that may be down to the mix.
Rosie Ash was just as I remember her from a production of Boheme in the 90s when I was clutched tightly to her bosom. She has hardly aged a day.
It was a good concert.

I enjoyed this mainly for the two R 's (Rob and Rosemary)
I've heard orchestras play the score better and unfortunately the cuts to score and text removed a lot of the anti organised religion element
This is still my go to recording

I would love to get all the music and lyrics together and form my own version - just for the fun of it. One song that I always enjoyed but doesn't always get included is the patter song for Pangloss about how he caught syphilis from Paquette (a bit like I got it from Agnes by Tom Lehrer) - it does tend to overextend the Auto Da Fe section and it does duplicate some of the sense of Dear Boy (which I think it is a weaker song) We are women (when it gets performed) is placed in a couple of different places in Act 2 (does it work better in South America or Venice?) - but it could also work in the Paris section. I rarely miss things like Quiet (which does go on a bit) or the Kings' Barcarolle But that is the fun of all the different versions, you could do a pick and mix edition and tailor things to your own vision |
