I think the only things they took from the books were the characters and the magic bedknob.  The star isn't in the book, nor is under the sea, or a football match. They travel once to London to try to see their mum, once to an apparently uninhabited island where they have a run in with a cannibal tribe in the first book. They come back with the bedding sopppibg and get sent home (they're not actually evacuees in the book, they're there because their mum is working and can't look after them over the summer). Then in the second book they stay with Miss Price and go back into the past, to 1666 where they meet Emilius (who's a necromancer) and bring him back to the present. He stays with them for a bit then they take him back. They then go to visit him again and find he's been arrested for witchcraft and starting the great fire of London. They save him using transubstitutiary locomotion, using clothes to fly her broom. They rescue him, and he's inherited (in the past) a farm near where they're staying. He asks Miss Price to marry him, and they go off into the past on the bed together. Very interesting! I didn't know much about the original books. I expect they will stick somewhat closely to the film's storyline given that that's what everyone knows and will be expecting, and it will be necessary for certain songs too. i.e. The song Beautiful Briny will require an underwater scene, Portobello Road will require a trip to Portobello Road etc. I expect quite a bit of puppetry, so that would make sense for the fish in the underwater scene. The cast includes quite a few experienced puppeteers and character actors. |

It was written by the same author as The Borrowers.
I listen to the soundtrack sometimes, and Portobello Road is so long and a bit boring. I hope they have lots of dancing to go with it!

Actually Portobello Road was edited on the film's original release to reduce the running time and only reinstated on the DVD release I think the soundtrack has everything original, because it has With A Flair which I think was also cut. |

Yes, the version we see today runs at about 2hrs 19mins and they have restored every bit of footage they possibly could, including getting actors to redub lines where the original audio was lost or unusable (as well as some dubious dubbing over some of the children's lines, you'll notice that Lansbury sounds a bit "older" and more like Mrs Potts in certain scenes as they were re-recorded in the 90s).
Step In The Right Direction is not in this final version as the footage was never found, only a few production stills of it exist, but you can hear Lansbury's vocal recording of it on the album.

Yes, the version we see today runs at about 2hrs 19mins and they have restored every bit of footage they possibly could, including getting actors to redub lines where the original audio was lost or unusable (as well as some dubious dubbing over some of the children's lines, you'll notice that Lansbury sounds a bit "older" and more like Mrs Potts in certain scenes as they were re-recorded in the 90s). Step In The Right Direction is not in this final version as the footage was never found, only a few production stills of it exist, but you can hear Lansbury's vocal recording of it on the album. That must mean Disney+ only has the cut-down version as it’s got 1hr 57m as the runtime on there. That’s disappointing. Though I did think that was already quite long for a kid’s film… |

I know with other things that had special edition DVD edits, like the first Star Trek film or the extended versions of Friends, the reason they give for not releasing them on bluray/HD/streaming/whatever is that they were only ever created at DVD resolution. I’d imagine this is a similar situation. |

I'll have to watch the film again, it's been ages since I've seen it, despite enjoying the soundtrack and having it on rotation!
I think The Beautiful Briny Sea might have been intended to go in May Poppins originally.

It's a shame about all the cuts as I think they were for financial reasons rather than artistic ones.Less running time means more showings during the day which means more tickets sold.I wonder if Disney had been alive he would have protected the movie more.It obviously was aiming to be "Mary Poppins Mark 2" with the Beautiful Briney/football match animated scenes emulating the "Jolly Holiday" sequence in Poppins and I guess "Portobello Road" being this movie's "Step in Time" Even more than that, it was actually originally developed by Disney as a REPLACEMENT for Mary Poppins when they couldn't get the rights from P.L. Travers. When they did finally get the rights to Poppins, they then parked Broomsticks for a few years. So the two have always had a parallel story going on from a production perspective, which explains the similarities in the approach. As Fairy Godmother says, Beautiful Briny could have popped up in either as it was originally written with Mary Poppins in mind. Personally, I always preferred B&B to MP. Miss Price is just a more interesting protagonist and the kids always seemed more fun and down to earth than Jane and Michael. |

I've still never seen the uncut version, my early 90s VHS ran 112 minutes so I'm assuming that's the most commonly known version? Even at only 3 minutes of actual singing, the Portobello road sequence is still pretty long. I never bought the 1996 release, though I do remember it being shown in it's full length form on the Disney Channel at some point.
Also, my video of Pete's Dragon was about 15 mins shorter than the official running time and has a few songs removed. I only noticed when I caught the start on TV once and the Gogan family had their own song which I'd never seen before.

"You" most probably know this already but there's a very good documentary about the Sherman Brothers on Disney+ called "The Boys". It's rather sad that they fell out. Families- who'd have them! Thank you for the recommendation, I'll definitely give that a watch. |

I believe the children's accents are real, but in the later restoration many of their lines had to be dubbed - the dubbing was not of the best quality and can be quite jarring.
The same happened with the lady who works in the post office in the village. Many of her scenes were put back in the film but had to be re-dubbed as the original audio was lost or damaged. As a result she goes from Scottish, to Welsh to West Country throughout the film.

Opens in 3 weeks. Anyone have an update of what we can expect? Diane has said “it’s very ambitious” This is exciting and means at least it won’t look like the 27th touring cast of Flashdance. I can imagine puppetry, shadow scenes, non literal imagery, lots of suspense of disbelief from the audience and it won’t rely on hydraulics or a sensational set as its touring …… BUT if done correctly and creatively it could be a massive hit. I’m thinking Prince of Egypt meets Grinning Man creativity here thrown in with the cherry picker arm from Chitty reused for the bed at end of Act 1. I’m travelling up to Newcastle to see it. So excited! |

Going to assume Dublin has either been pulled or postponed from the tour. It’s still on sale at the theatre, but has been removed from the shows website.
Makes sense as Ireland is definitely a bit behind with the restriction easing.
