I had always thought the character was late 40s, in which case I’d say Joanna Riding would be perfect. If played younger, I agree on Laura Pitt-Pulford but have to put Clare Halse in the mix too with Gemma Sutton. My votes go to Alex Young and Rebecca Lock! |

Trying to book for this through ATG, but getting a very strange error message:

Removed the ticket, logged out, logged back in again, selected the same ticket and it all worked. No idea what happened there. Anyway, these are on sale through ATG for anyone interested. Don't know if you need to book quick, will these tickets will fly away? |

I can sort of visualise how they might do the underwater scenes, but how the dickens are they going to do the football match? Can't wait to find out!

It's about time they turned this into a musical! I'm surprised they hadn't done this earlier! (I know they had been working on this last year, but had some unfortunate things happen to cause it's delay)
I guess my biggest concern may be how they will implement the Nazi's at the end, seeing how sensitive people are nowadays and Disney may not want to have a musical that features them. Although 'Sound of Music' still does in terms of newer productions, but I don't know.

The football matches in The Boy in the Dress last year at the RSC were very well done. But I wouldn't be surprised if it got cut in this as it's not that integral to the plot. It's about time they turned this into a musical! I'm surprised they hadn't done this earlier! Baz writes this in his artcle; "The invading Germans, for instance, will be known as the 'Looming Shadow', taken from the Blitz propaganda posters.

Of course some updates are inevitable, but I don't want them to sugarcoat it in any way. Regardless, I'm still excited for this! |

I agree, history is history, they shouldn't sanitize it too much.
And I've just rewatched the football match on YouTube and yeah, it really doesn't affect the plot at all does it! Just lots of slapstick, brilliant as it is. So ok, they can cut it. As long as they do The Beautiful Briny Sea in all its aquatic glory 😁

I'd love to see this. I always get a bit muddled with the plot though, because I know the books better than the film.
I hope they put some of the cut songs back in it — With a Flair is such a good song to introduce you to David Tomlinson, and I think you only get a tiny bit of it in the film, although the whole thing is on the soundtrack.
This might be controversial, but I always thought Portobello Road drags on a bit.
I think it could be a really good, fun, family musical.

I have a feeling it's going to be a bit more of a small-scale production rather than the usual Disney grandeur though. Looking at the touring dates and venues, there's a lot of smaller theatres and very short runs of just a few days, which doesn't sound like a big, technical show with lots of sets and elaborate effects. I'm thinking that the report that the "ensemble will help the magic happen" suggests that it'll be more a case of physical-theatre techniques that show things like Miss Price doing magic, rather than perhaps her flying off over the audience like Mary Poppins.
Either way, if done well it'll be very interesting to see! Always been a favourite film of mine, especially for Lansbury's performance and I hope they go with a mature actress with more character, than a traditional West End pop-belter for the role.

I worry that this won’t be done in its 10/10 professional West End glory.
Instead it will end up looking like a magical fun touring panto.
Imagine a palladium version and then Leeds QDOS panto version and then a UK tour that visits Southend and Darford version.

Yes, don't forget this is a licensed production, not produced by Disney so the budget is not going to be Mega Millions. As exciting as this is, I doubt this will be automated to high heaven, this is likely to be heavily reliant on projection. I worry that this won’t be done in its 10/10 professional West End glory. I hope it not so scaled down or as cheap as the last beauty and the beast tour or the awful Shrek at Drury Lane. You watch the DVD of Shrek and see what they did and then we got a set of of painted backdrops.
I really hope its creative and manages to deliver some if the magic the film does.

The directors, Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison, run the Glasgow based Vox Motus theatre company. Their work has tended to be about telling stories through innovative design using magic, puppets, movement and multi-media rather than big traditional set pieces (a la Mary Poppins). So I'd expect this will be along those lines - and less literal than some of the other Disney shows such as Poppins, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin - indeed possibly most like The Lion King or Harry Potter (I know that's not Disney) - though I'd guess on a much smaller scale. The one-week tour stops would certainly be in line with that. As someone who has found quite a lot of the aforementioned shows lacking in theatrical invention, too often relying on trying to replicate the film on stage - I'm quite excited about what this production might hold.
Incidently the Vox Motus production of Flight is currently at The Bridge Theatre - and it's certainly a pretty unique piece of storytelling.
