Oh my! I'm so happy to see this again! I used to love your website... I had no idea who had made it, but it was an amazing resource. I have never come across anyone else who shares with me the same passion for old ALW 1970s B Sides etc! Thank you! There is a small group of us, I think, who share this passion. It was harder to research 30 years ago, before the internet really took off. I remember advertising in Record Collector magazine asking for unusual ALW discs. Got some good stuff that way Now everything can be found online in an instant. Not everything!! It's years and years since I've heard the recordings from Cricket, for example, and I've never tracked them down anywhere. But it is certainly a niche passion. Not sure how many out there ever feel compelled to listen to Seven and a Half Percent Swing, for example! (And that probably includes ALW and TR!)

Oh for you "kids" on here... you don't know what a treasure Steve is 24 years ago, his site was a daily "go-to" for ALW fans in the internet's infancy. He was as updated as twitter was when WDTW first opened - giving all kinds of updates and finding reviews. And his Tiretracks website was a TREASURE trove. Why RUG never hired him as one of their PR people is a mystery... Back to By Jeeves... "Female of the Species" and "Today" are two HUGE omissions to the revised By Jeeves Steve - did I read that correctly - the BY JEEVES recordings are 1 - the limited Scarborough CD (which I have) that there's TWO London cast recordings (only have one) the American one and a BBC one???

Scrub that the whole album is on there - look up Songs From Cricket Edit - AND on Spotify although these recordings don’t appear to be from 1986 and seems like a revival recording. Anyway ENJOYS!!

Thank you!! Sadly, that album is actually a collection of songs about cricket from different sources - only one of which is from the musical (and performed partly by Tim Rice to boot!). Once upon a time I had some of the demos from the show on a minidisc but that died long ago. Pretty sure they were never made commercially available, and of course a lot of the music appears in later ALW shows. I'm also wondering - were any of the songs from Jacob's Journey ever made available anywhere, even as unreleased recordings? (I know a couple of the tunes exist with other lyrics.) And was anything recorded from Come Back Richard except the title song (and, of course, the music that became Try It & See/King Herod's Song)?

Is anyone else as disappointed with this whole thing as I am?
Now whilst I do not wish to come across as being ungrateful for the fact that they are free however before I get persecuted for such a comment, let me explain.
I am a theatre nerd and as such, with the exception of one or two, everything he's released I already have on DVD, so for me, he's released nothing new that I haven't already seen.
I have said it many times publicly and several time on thus forum anything that's going to attach a new fan base for live theatre, I'm all for. However, if you scroll back to the start of this thread people where hoping for things like Aspect of Love, Starlight Express, Song & Dance, Stephen Ward or something about Sunset Boulevard, but nothing. Not even a making of documentary.
No mention of Whistle Down the Wind or The Woman in White.
And they're only available for such a limited period of time.
Possibly I'm greedy but give us more.

He hasn’t released anything. Universal released the ALW videos in their catalogue, just as ALW said they would in his initial announcement. Not sure where people suddenly got the idea ALW would be releasing private archive recordings of shows never previously made public. Seems a lot of people misunderstood “The Shows Must Go On” series.

As much as I would like it to be different, but I agree with steve10068. The "The shows must go on" program is not intended for us hardcore fans, but rather as an advertisement for musical theater for people who have not yet gone to the theater.

Whilst this is clearly the case, why as an example, was a picture of Ria Jones as Norma Desmond used in the promo for it? This gives hope to saddoes like me that think we might actually be getting something new to watch. 😔

I know it costs money but they REALLY should have filmed The Woman in White at Charing Cross - it’s the PERFECT production and cast of an average show.

Took a little while to find this, as it was on a different YouTube channel, but here, for anyone who's interested, is ALW's live commentary on Cats:

Been really enjoying it! Watching my blu ray along with his youtube channel on my phone!
Some anecdotes I didn't know (many I did), plus there were some thinly veiled digs at the Tom Hooper film!

Is it bad that I’m quite enjoying ‘Cats’? Is it my age? Desperation for a bit of theatre? The earworm ALW hooks repeating over & over?

Those digs were veiled? Makes you wonder how the thing came to be. ALW can see whats wrong with it , and presumably had some say., i also recently listened to one of the good actors in it say they knew it was problematic filming it. And the bad actors/woefully misca(s)ts ones, all made fun of the mess they helped create. Who did think it was going well?
Watching tonight its plain that they could have done better with another MT cast and a few major actors like this version, and the recent tour version, with a current MT cast that was recorded, looks better still.

Hasn't ALW got any more filmed shows he could put on? if he has why end the series now?
I see the Lambert Jackson/theatre cafe home Concert series also ends soon too . I would pay for another from the people i have seen, and there's plenty of other top stars who could do one.I could name half a dozen people i would pay to hear now.
Seems a bit odd to put some shows on to raise money for unemployed actors and support staff and to remind the public what they are missing, and then stop now ? There's not gong to be any theatre or cabarets otherwise till 2021. Perhaps they have to do what Leicester Curve and Chichester, have done - put on a recording of some standard shows that did really well and won't be back for a while?

Hasn't ALW got any more filmed shows he could put on? if he has why end the series now? As has been mentioned recently, I think that's due to it being Universal putting on their back-catalogue of ALW shows as opposed to ALW himself! I guess Universal must be all out now.
