The Cats situation is more akin to paying full price to see a show on stage and only finding out during the performance that you're watching a preview. Isn’t the version released to cinemas the same as seen by the critics? Therefore it isn’t the same situation as a preview. This is more like the tinkering that continues to happen after opening night. They aren't 'tinkering' anything, they are completing their original work. I imagine the FX company are extremely embarrassed this has happened to them as well and are doing everything they can to save their reputation. Considering most of the films criticism has been about the shoddy FX work when it isn't shoddy, it is just incomplete. After this and the the Bohemian Rhapsody fiasco, the FX industry in the UK is not having the best of times. |

What a disaster. Can’t bear Wilson and Corden, just being Wilson and Corden. Cats is nothing without the brilliance of Dame Gillian Lynne and would never have been successful in the first had it not been for her groundbreaking choreography. Take that away and you’re left with.....very little

The Avatar characters were far weirder looking than this and people got used to those in 2 minutes. Of course that was a big dumb 'boy' movie though, so it didn't cop any backlash. If this was a film where the cats looked exactly the same but were all running around with machine guns shooting each other, their appearance would not be a problem I'm sure... Lol! Avatar is a ‘dumb boy’ movie!?!? Does that make Cats a ‘silly girl’ movie!?! |

What happened with that film? Even though the film did well over a billion dollars in cinema and home video sales, the company that did all the FX work on the film went broke and none of the people who did the work on it ever got paid. |

In no way do I see Cats as that but was trying to make a small point. what the heck has a 9 movie franchise (some of them got just as bad reviews as Cats) about racing cars after to do with a musical about suicidal cats!? i think movie musicals are a hard affair to pull off. On stage audience and cast feed off each other’s energy, almost impossible to replicate on film. |

I think this is absolute nonsense. (I wanted to use a stronger word.) Avatar was by no means a great movie but they were supposed to be aliens. These are supposed to be real animals that a lot of people see every day. Yes they’re singing and dancing cats and you have to suspend your disbelief but they clearly weren’t one hundred percent sure or ready with the concept for this. It works in the theatre but clearly this concept doesn’t. Maybe people weren’t ready for this, or it’s just bad but the gun argument is way too simplistic. |

And Mamma Mia did (very well) what it said on the tin. Comparing like for like though and considering only sung through musicals and the list of hits reduces dramatically. For me it's only Evita. Sung through vs traditional pose very different challenges. There are of course many old traditional musical films. But making movies of the sung through 70s/80s/90s/00s stuff seems very difficult! |

Sweeney Todd did well because 90% of the audience didnt know it was a musical going into it. Into The Woods - Big hit and a great adaptation. Not afraid of being a musical. Rent - Huge flop. There are ALOT of other musical film flops, but Cats has always been a much maligned show, and i feel people were going into it not liking it already. Theres really is no way to make a feature film of the stage show, keep it faithful to the original story and make it appeal to the masses.
Edited to add: Dreamgirls had an identity crisis.It started off by cutting all the recitative (sung dialogue) and kept it to songs sung in performance on stage and in recording studios, so when they suddenly started to sing to each other in Familly, its jarring.

I also love Bridesmaids and Mean Girls (and I didn't even hate Ghostbusters, even though I hated Ghostbusters), so nothing wrong with a good silly girl movie over here either. However, not everyone feels the same way and they are loud and they have internet connections... These 'cats' look slightly (like VERY slightly) different to the way they have always looked since the musical debuted nearly 40 years ago. In fact from a distance they look EXACTLY the same. It has been filmed with them looking the same way a gazillion times on tv adverts, tv performances and even entire film versions of the stage play for 4 decades and yet everyone is acting like they have never seen anything like it before. It is completely baffling to me that their look is getting the reception it is and it has baffled me since the first trailer over reaction. If they didn't look the way they do ie a slightly updated version of the originals, there would've probably been an even bigger hissyfit. |

Big names in Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Collitard, and it bombed. They might be Oscar winners, but people still aren't willing to pay money to see people sing to each other. It's an odd choice to put on film, but i guess they thought the names would get people in. |

My point would be that they just fail to register as strongly as characters as they do in the stage show - what makes them different- the stronger make up , and the human character and physique behind it, is lost in the faux fur. They don't connect. Thats amplified by the poor film cutting chopping the dancing, so we get to see them show off their moves less , the curious cuts of some of their most iconic and individual dances, and the relative weakness of the cat's different attitudes to Grizabella . That looked like more political correctness- in case the weak minded audience collapsed at seeing her properly shunned by the tribe, The emotions just come over better in the musical - shunned and chased away - to love and acceptance - this was all a bit meh in a miaow way,
