I am no fan of Cats by any stretch of the imagination, in fact it is in my Top 3 worst musicals ever. But these reviews are just a very mean spirited pile on 6 months in the making.
It reminds me of when Batman V Superman came out and people were just trying to out nasty each other with absurdities that didn't have anything to do with the film.

It has always been "fashionable" to bash Cats. I read a couple of reviews saying "it's the show everyone rightly mocks." It's never been a favorite of mine, but I've respected it for being ground-breaking at the time... unconventional in every sense of the word, and ALW's music is as always (to me at least) fantastic. The knives have been getting sharpened since the first trailer dropped in the summer. I'm still not convinced it's going to tank as some gleeful predict. Which would be the ultimate vindication

Is it fashionable to have an opinion? You either like something or you don’t. That doesn’t mean you don’t appreciate it’s worth or it’s place in MT history. All of the children it inspired to dance. I would never look down on anyone JUST for liking ‘Cats’...nah, I’m lying...I totally would. 😂

But like many popular juggernaughts it is pretty much critic proof. I don't actually think Phantom is that much better frankly, but that thing is never going to die based on its legacy alone. I haven't have ever liked a single one of these massively successful musicals. I don't get the love for Wicked or The Lion King either. They all however seem to be above any kind of criticism as far as the general public goes and loved simply because they've been so successful.

I read an interesting article on the whitewashing issue with this film too. The fact that one of the black actors are playing the white cat? Seems the woke culture will pick at anything! I can’t wait to see it!

On the Jennifer Hudson version the ‘sunlight through the trees...’ but is truly dreadful. (I know it’s not her singing it.) Good grief, I just heard it, and it really is bad. Reminds me of Emma Watson's autotuned voice in Beauty and the Beast. And then the voice just...gives out at the high notes? Awful.

I can’t wait to see it! I wouldn't call that a "woke" culture. That culture is asleep and trapped in a racist psychosis. Maybe in 100 years people are woke, and we can enjoy the celebration of inclusion, where black girls can dress up as Snow white and white girls can dress up as Tiana if they like to, and celebrate it, and actors can play animals without people judging them on their fur.

I do hope it isn’t a total flop box office wise.

haven't seen it yet - but I had pre-ordered and just listened to the highlights album. I don't know how it looks, but it sounds incredible. They probably should have released the album in advance to build up a bit more good press/buzz. I'm disappointed that it's not a full recording, but this is the first time I can ever remember listening to a recording of Cats from beginning to end. Swift's "Macavity" is perfect. And the in-movie version of "Beautiful Ghosts" sounds even more effective then the Swift version. Not usually a James Corden fan - but his Bustopher Jones was spot on.
The new orchestrations are spectacular. This definitely got me more excited to see this after way too many people seemed to be trying to out catty each other in their "reviews."

Even if the film isn't great (I'm seeing it later) - I am really enjoying the soundtrack. Jennifer Hudson's Memory is an obvious highlight - but other highlights for me include: Mr Mistoffelees, Beautiful Ghosts, Skimbleshanks and Old Deuteronomy.

I’m definitely not a James Corden fan but it takes a particular type of A-hole to slag someone off and @ them on the tweet.

I do hope it isn’t a total flop box office wise. Just been chatting movies to another middle aged Star Wars fan boy over dinner and I too am finding myself rooting for the ‘under-dog’ here. One youTube review site said they really couldn’t tell if it was going to be a total box office bomb or a billion dollar smash but they could see it go either way. And that was AFTER they’d seen it. It certainly doesn’t fall into the trap of most movies these days of being produced ‘by committee’ and becoming bland and forgettable as a result. I’ll definitely be going (after a few wines).

Predicted to open with $14-$17 million. A critical and commercial mauling it seems.

Memory, not a queue on the pavement. Has the film lost its audience, I am watching alone. In the screenlight, the withered popcorn collects at my feet And the reviewers begin to moan

Predicted to open with $14-$17 million. A critical and commercial mauling it seems. That was predicted before any reviews came out, as Variety reported that on 10th Dec:
However, it possibly remains unchanged. The Greatest Showman only took $8.8 in it's opening weekend.

Just listening to the soundtrack, and I'm happy to hear they use the original "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" tune. Does anyone know why they change back-and-forth with this?
I agree with the others above who said the soundtrack sounds great.
