Tom Hooper is completely clueless about this artform.
The essence of this artform is to stay away from realistic norms, as the language is per definition a triumph of the fantasy.
In Les Mis the biggest pitfall was to choose a too literal approach. Because this artform per definition is not. He fell into it.
Result: 2,5 hours of cringe worthy bleating in eachother's face in a literal world.
In Cats the biggest pitfall was to make the characters look too much like humans in a suit. Because there are only 2 routes here that could work, either realistic looking cats, or embracing the fantasy and create more cartoon-esque cats. He fell into it. They look like humans in a suit.
He does not seem to grasp what actually takes audiences on a sincere journey in this artform. I think he might even be convinced that both films work, because he has a different view of what is "real" in this artform than most audience members?
In Les Mis he's apologizing for the singing and the fantasy, in Cats he's apologizing for the cats.
Embracing it is the only option in my opinion. Raw and real, a sincere journey lies in different things from what he thinks.

Even if I hadnt had my mind poisoned by act 1 at the Opera House Manchester a few years ago, the sight of james Corden in a fur fat suit but with totally human hands has killed it stone dead for me.

...and my brain won’t let me past the horrible 3 hours I endured in the New London many moons ago. Apparently I looked visibly shaken in the interval, so disturbed was I by the whole enterprise. 5 words were spoken.

On FILM you can’t! On the silver screen everything becomes more real and that’s why everyone is freaked out about the number of nipples, noses, fur coats on fur, ratio and so on. Well, I grew up watching singing bears and snakes in the Jungle Book and loads of people cite the fox in Robin Hood as an early crush so I really don't see this as a problem. Btw, I do think it's a shame they didn't go for the classic, Jungle Book/101 Dalmatians-era Disney animated approach but everything is CGI now and celebrity faces sell a film. |

Yep we should be celebrating the artifice. we've seen clearly with War horse that such artifice can still bear the weight of heavy drama and emotion. it's that lack of T S Eliot in the trailer, and the new banal language, that worries me. Funny how these big musical adaptations are scared of being seen as musicals. So many never knew Sweeney todd was a musical until they were in the cinema.

He was rumoured to star in Forum for a while but I think his TV career took off... I think he would be excellent in Forum. He would be playing himself but hey hum. |

The London premiere has been delayed due to issues with the CGI, according to the Daily Mail. Cinemas are slowly losing confidence in this. Luckily it’s out Christmas week, so that’ll boost it, and Little Women is out 26th December so attention can quickly move on to that being a success. |

To be fair, the trailer could have been the most amazing trailer ever created, but it's still going to only attract a certain audience. As i mentioned, ALW is still in Abbey Road Studios finishing the music and is booked again for this week, so i would imagine its that rather than CGI. |

To be fair, the trailer could have been the most amazing trailer ever created, but it's still going to only attract a certain audience. As i mentioned, ALW is still in Abbey Road Studios finishing the music and is booked again for this week, so i would imagine its that rather than CGI. Very little marketing so far surrounding it. No screener yet for programmers. Murmurs of issues with CGI, trailer backlash, customer feedback. We’ve just been told to allow for an extra 10 minutes on the original running time - so to still be in the editing suite 3 weeks out from release is worrying. |

I like the new song, Beautiful Ghosts which was written for one reason only, so that it can be eligible for an Oscar, didn’t know Taylor Swift was that talented. Meanwhile after playing the new song about 10 times both my cats headed for the cat flaps.
