9 to 24 September in Birmingham, 6 Oct to 5 Nov in Leicester. www.curveonline.co.uk/whats-on/shows/the-importance-of-being-earnest/I got a bit excited when I saw that this is on, as it's a play that I've wanted to see recently. However I read the description... Would this play particularly work well in contemporary setting? I thought it was supposed to be a sophisticated comedy, but the artwork makes it look like some sort of thriller!

It seems they want to put a spin on this as they did with Streetcar last year, perhaps reinventing the plays on the syllabus. But I'm not sure that it's exciting programming really.

I wonder when the Birmingham tickets go on sale? Must be in the Studio space as Jane Eyre is on in the main house during this time.

I imagine the REP is pretty close to doing an Autumn/Winter season announcement, it must be a bit late this year. It usually opens with something good in September, I.e. Alan Bennett's People, Lenny Henry in Rudy's Rare Records and King Charles III. Obviously next years is the NT's Jane Eyre.

All seats from row J back are blacked out and there seems to be a rearrangement of seat prices. Also no over 60 discount anymore. I must say that I don't find anything that I really want to see in this season.

Previews started last night to a sold out house (and for tonight!). Seeing it in less than two weeks, anyone else been or going?
There's also a rehearsals interview video which includes a glimpse of the set model. Looks like the type of set that could either be very good or very awful in full scale... (POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT)

If they said 'relevant' one more time, I was likely to lump them. They are doing a period production in a mirror box - whoop-de-doo.
I really don't think that Foster gets it at all from what he was saying in that. And no Lady Bracknell would ever cross her legs like that.

Might see this at Curve. The set looks like it could be difficult to watch and that they are over-egging the pudding. Curve, for the past few plays, seem to want to reinvent classic plays but I'm not sure they've been very successful in that yet - or if they have not in the same league as other productions.
Having said that I saw Adrian Noble's production last year. As much as I enjoyed it and Suchet's performance some younger members of the cast seemed to be wanting to reach out and refresh the play a little, making it a little more modern.

The REP does a scheme where 14-30 year olds can get £5 tickets to the previews of certain productions. Also there was a bank holiday offer where you could get tickets for £10 last week (which was how I got mine). |

Just got in from this. I enjoyed it! Didn't know much about the play before going in (apart from "A HaAaAndbaaaAAaaaag?!") but thought the script was incredibly witty and clever.
The entire cast were hilarious, but the set and costumes ended up looking terriffic! The mirrors didn't distract like I thought they would (apart from when a fly started buzzing around 10 minutes in!), although it was a shame because you could see the rear half of the REP's seating being empty. I was also concerned that making the costumes contemporary would detract the satirical Victorian feel, but it was more of a hybrid of both contemporary and Victorian which were bright and colourful, so they looked fantastic!
Overall I thought it was great, although I haven't seen any prior productions so couldn't compare. Felt like it ran quite nice and quick, probably due to it having only 4 scenes. There was also a post-show discussion tonight which I couldn't stay for, as I didn't know how long it would be, nor particularly had any questions for.
