Now I have to admit I'm only really familiar with the movie and the only stage version I've seen was on a cruise ship this summer but I enjoyed that much more. Was that Royal Caribbean? If so, my friend is in that production. He's playing Sonny! |

I saw Wednesday matinee too. The new songs (well the 3 that were performed) are just not good! Since Shobna Gulati wasn't there her song obviously wasn't in it. I assume that was only slotted in to give Jessica Paul a longer quick change as she seemed to be trying to fix her costume once she appeared.
Sophie Issacs also appeared injured, ankle heavily strapped up and no dancing.
I don't know if the curve have understudies since there's only 4 ensemble but if they don't they could run into some problems if they just cut characters

I emailed Curve to ask about the missing Miss Lynch on Wednesday's matinee (well, if you don't ask you don't find out...) - Shobna Gulati had a family emergency, but she was back on in the evening. They have contingency plans to work around any missing characters.

Tbh the lack of Miss Lynch made very little difference, I would be very interested to see what they would do if it was any other character

Well, I caught this last week and it wa unbridled fun. Dex Lee is a marvellous and charismatic Danny.
Didn't know the show that well, but saw the film years ago, so knew most of the score, a couple of surprises in there.
Amazing set and lighting designs. The Curve stage is HUGE!

I loved this tonight. I haven't heard some of these songs for so long and I love some from the stage show that aren't in the movie. I can see how they'd have done it without the teacher (Lynch?) earlier in the week as she doesn't have much to do, and her song felt pretty irrelevant and a dip in proceedings just as you're approaching the climax of the show. Great cast with some incredible singing and dancing. Loved the staging and that stage really is big!
Great show, and very different to the Grease of recent years on stage, in a refreshingly good way.

Looking at the song list, it's interesting they've cut Rock n Roll Party Queen and moved Those Magic Changes to Act 2.

Back from seeing the show this afternoon. This is the first time i've seen it on stage though i watched the tv musical earlier this year. I'm not the biggest fan n the film or that tv musical, so i didn't expect to love this, and i didn't, but i still enjoyed it and thought it was a good production. The choreography was especially fantastic.
I must say though i wasn't sure about Dex Lee as Danny. To me there seemed something missing and maybe he was a little stilted in some of the portrayal. I just wasn't sold on him. I thought all the other cast were great though.
Even though it wasn't my fave, it was good fun and another good production by Curve.

I saw the show this afternoon after deciding a few months ago I'd prefer to travel to Leicester to see Curve's new production than catch the former West End show on its umpteenth tour next year. I was hoping to see something vibrant and fresh and that's exactly what the Curve delivered.
One of the main incentives in seeing the show in Leicester was to avoid (Danielle Hope aside) the stunt casting of lead roles on the tour. Curve didn't disappoint. Dex Lee oozed charisma as Danny. I was a bit unsure about Jessica Paul at first but was easily won over, her rendition of Hopelessly Devoted to You was absolutely stunning. Djalenga Scott was pure class as Betty Rizzo, her There Are Worse Things I Could Do was another highlight, while Sophie Isaacs' stage presence and sass shone through as Frenchie. The pick of the rest was Sophie Camble as Patty Simcox - great comic timing and infectious energy. Shobna Gulati was fine but her character is pretty dispensable, her solo number even more so.
All in all then this was another great production by Leicester Curve that seems to be going from strength to strength under Nikolai Foster's stewardship as Artistic Director. Their take on Grease is huge fun, aided by sensational choreography (as always) from Nick Winston that does a great job of filling the vast stage. It's also the most impressive set I've seen at the Curve - it looks very good and works well.
I ended up enjoying this far more than I expected. While not a huge fan of the film, I liked that this production took the show back to its roots, while the combination of the stunning vocals and choreography made watching those iconic songs being performed a real joy. Grease IS the word.
Four stars.

The Curve are reviving their 2016 production of Grease in summer 2019. The exact dates for its new run in Leicester are still to be announced.

I mean i enjoyed it and will go....but why? Why not something new (that's old)? Or actually, even better, new (that's new?)?
I guess they have got On Your Feet they are co-producing so that takes some time up and they are, i know, workshopping various new bits of work, which again they may be pre occupied by next year, so maybe they just wanted something easy to bring back. Dunno.
