Big Boots Theatre Company Presents Look Back in Anger by John Osborne
25 Feb 2020 - 14 Mar 2020
A play I have wanted to see for a while, not been to this Theatre before but a play that should work well in an intimate space.

I’ve been a few times, they occasionally do revivals that you’d never see anywhere else. They shifted the location of the auditorium during the last redevelopment of the pub which improved things (you used to get noise from the pub) and now it’s a good fringe venue. In common with many others though their marketing is poor and you have to actively watch for things of interest.

Indeed, you have to constantly remind yourself to check their website. Much. like Finborough or tbe Union. Im waiting for a renaissance rarity but there hasnt been one for ages.

The last thing I saw there in 2018 was The Unnatural Tragedy, a play from 1662 by Margaret Cavendish. It had never been produced before and I can confidently say it never will be again.

I think i gave you the heads up on that one. I should have qualified my comments to say a play that interests me.😉

I've been a few times but not for ages. Not encouraged by location/transport and the fact that it's not near any other venues - a little like the Turbine in that respect - so takes you out of your way and needs more time. Though there have been recent productions which appealed to me, I prioritised others which were easier to reach and more combinable with plans for the rest of the day.

It's a decent venue. I was there a couple of times last year to see stuff by, or featuring, people I know.
It's not far away at all from Kennington tube, cross the road and a 2/3 minute walk. Less than 150 metres away.
It doesn't have a coherent production strategy like, say, the Finborough but it is like a box of treasures as it allows access to the London fringe to creatives due to its policy of short runs and accepting theatre hire. I haven't managed the art of being in two theatres at the same time but the Southwark Playhouse isn't a million miles away. Beyond that the Union and the Chocolate Menier.
Good beer too.

I went for the first time recently. A real mixed bag. I’m not sure if they have an artistic strategy or if they programme anyone who wants to hire the space.

It's about 3-minutes from the Northern Line (Kennington), and the slightly hilarious lady announcer in the lift is too posh for even the BBC.
It's quite local to me. I do tend to think the success of pub theatre productions can depend on the depth of the acting .. couldn't say my last visit was a huge success though it's a good venue and a decent gastro pub/pub.

In fact I find the Finborough mailing list one of the best there is, always very clear what they have on. I just tried to join the White Bear one and it said I’m already on it - that’s how ineffective it is, obviously made no impression on me at all.

I saw this play last week. Quite liked it, suits an intimate venue.
