Our goody bag arrived Thurs and we watched last night.
We’ve got brilliant broadband but had issues at first until following the advice on their email switched quality to 480p and it was fine after that.
Loved the show, the cast were very strong indeed. Would have loved to see it live but this was a great substitute. Very well put together.

Chromecast not an option despite their words. Luckily I had the laptop & an hdmi cable on standby...and it is fantastic! No quality issues at all.
....and that was just magnificent. No other word for it.

After what seemed like 525600 minutes since booking for this show. sitting down tonight, I was hoping that the technological gremlins wouldn't make an appearance during the stream which thankfully they did. As a streamed production, I was very impressed with the overall editing of the show and certainly had no issue with how it was put together in terms of camera work and sound editing.
Whilst I enjoyed it, I couldn't say that I loved it. For me I think the chemistry between the characters was lacking and the lack of physical contact at times between the cast didn't help. I appreciate that under the current situation this wasn't possible but as a viewer there was certainly a more emotional detachment from the piece than I expected which didn't really allow me to go on that emotional journey with these characters than I went on when I last saw a RENT production back in 2001 in Leeds.
Cast wise for me there really were some standout performances - Blake Patrick Anderson, Tom Francis, Dom Hartley-Harris and Jocasta Almgill.
Dom Hartley-Harris in particular for his "I'll Cover You" in Act 2 certainly packed a punch for me.
I wasn't too keen on the staging. The minimalist set for me really didn't work as I didn't that sense of the piece being in a NY apartment or of people living together. I think being sat on my sofa watching the show rather being in the auditorium and having the production play out in front of me was contributed to this feeling.
Overall, I'm glad the Hope Mill team have been able to get a show to an audience in these difficult times for the theatre industry. The HM team are a great bunch of folk and hopefully 2021 will allow us to return in person to this wonderful theatre.

I loved it. I dunno if it’s because I’ve not seen a show since the ETAJ tour in March but I genuinely thought it was perfect, and the livestream was a great way for it to be accessible to everyone in the UK - not just people in Manchester.

I enjoyed. Really good quality recording and thankfully no technical issues - watched on chrome.
It's years since I saw Rent and I realised in terms of friendship the book is strong but for loving relationships its poor but so is Puccini's Boheme. One day I'll read Murger's original novel and see if its the same.
Great performances from Roger, Mark, Angel and Collins.
Are cast members allowed to touch? I thought it was directed to be socially distanced, hence the minimalist 'text based' staging and then at the end we get awkward crotch shots and hand holding

The obvious pains to keep distance being completely ruined by that weird last shot just highlighted how unnecessary the staging was. |

To be fair, they only bubbled up when they moved to Manchester, so only tech onwards, so during rehearsals they all had to socially distance and therefore keep physical contact to a minimum.

I took the lack of ‘connection’ to be a stylistic & directorial choice, only being broken at the end by the resolution of everyones various storylines....and will say again that it was really great. It felt like being on stage with them due to it’s size.

It's interesting to see these comments on the distancing. When I saw it live it really wasn't that apparent- there were a few moments which I can recall, but they seemed more like natural staging choices rather than something that had been imposed.

I think I would have preferred not to have the caption saying they were in a bubble then, as all I could think about was why they were persisting with the weird staging, that for me didn't work at all, if they'd gone to the trouble of isolating together! Probably says a lot about how much the production failed to hold my attention as well I suppose. |

I thought this was a touch of directorial brilliance, it was a sly nod to the current situation but narrative it was a touch of brilliance with them finding that full connection at the finale (the holding of hands was powerful). What a brilliant production- so glad we got to see it...I truly think this could return to Hope Mill next year & perhaps down in London too (here’s hoping!!) |

This is a superb production with an insanely talented cast!
Tom Francis as Roger stole the show with his gorgeous voice and acting. I could feel all the pain and anguish of Roger just through his facial expressions, and his scenes with Mimi were highlights. Mimi's actress (cannot spell her name sorry!)portrayed her as a fragile yet determined woman and she was wonderful to watch. Jocasta Almgill is one of my most favourite actresses and her voice is just pure power - perfect casting. Her scenes with Millie O'Connell were hilarious. Blake Anderson's Mark again wonderful. "What You Own" felt like a little rock cocert I adored it. Collins and Angel made me tear up - the lack of physical contact didn't take anything away from their relationship in my opinion. The "Tango Maureen" without touch actually worked really well.
This was my first time watching RENT and I found it fairly easy to follow the plot. I thought the entire production was enticing and extremely clever. Well done to the Hope Mill for this show and for allowing me to switch show dates without any hassle.

I was able to swap between casting from my phone when it became cleat that chromecast wasn’t an option, to my laptop. Once I’d logged in I was able to swap to another device.

I really enjoyed it. Interesting staging. Cast were great. Quality stream bur really hope it has a life beyond this. It's no substitute for truly being in the moment

Obviously I’ve broken my promise to myself not to book anything new til we know whats occurring. Well, it is ‘Rent’ and it was ferociously good on a tv screen so I suspect one might catch fire in the same room.
