Juliette has been a vocal coach for 25 years apparently. I saw the show in all its incarnations at the Prince Edward quite a lot from the beginning. Of Juliette and Iain, I preferred her vocally. Makes me think of the alternate Arnaud, Glyn Kerslake. I once saw him on the wednesday doing main Enjolras at Les Mis and the day after as Arnaud. Apparently he once did also u/s Valjean in the same week he did Arnaud and Enjolras. Anyway, he was a much superior Arnaud I thought. Matt Rawle was also a fantastic newcomer, and later on the young David Shannon as Guillaume (even better than Jerome Pradon in my view). Those were the days! That brought back some memories - i think Hal Fowler also used to double up between the Palace and the Prince Edward. I agree, Glyn Kerslake was a better Arnaud and I thought David Shannon was definitive as Guillaume - menacing and nasty. I also very much liked Sebastian Torkia's take on Benoit, which really sued to choke me up. Yes, I know Louison was just a ratty old scarecrow, but she was his scarecrow. That bit at the end when they burned her - heartbreaking...

My over riding memory of Pradon is of him being a big spitter. We mostly sat in the front row once it was established and enjoyed many a soaking 😳😬

I never really liked Hal. Not as Javert, not as Arnaud. Don't think he did the roles at the same time though. Made me think of the closing night. I was there too, emotional evening. More than 25 years ago

I'm no David Shannon fan anyway but I'm firmly in the Jerome Pradon being the definitive Guillaume camp. I'm not sure I've ever liked anyone else in the role though. His manic cackle was everything. I also preferred Glyn as Arnaud. Glyn & Ma-Anne Dionisio in the lead roles were a wonderful combo when she later became the alternate. And I believe the first (only?) female performer to lead all 3 B&S musicals (Kim, Eponine, Bertrande)?.

I often feel like I'm the only one who likes the Louison storyline. I think in todays times with our awareness of mental health etc I think this storyline will bring even more heart into the show.

Any sign of this happening at the Old Vic this year? Summer/autumn is still available so far

Obviously this is a complete fabrication and I live in extreme optimisitic hope! I've genuinely no idea whether it features at the OV this year - would be great to see it get a three month run though!

If the gods of theatre grant me nothing else this year, let it be this one. I don't even care which version (that's almost true). Just give me an anguished young man belting out Martin Guerre for all he's worth.

I really hope this does come back at some point - got listening to the original cast recording over 10 years ago and have been longing for a revival since then. I had 2 of my big theatrical dreams realised last year, hope it's not too greedy to wish for 1 more for this year.

It's certainly not going to appear at the Old Vic this year. Thanks for clarifying - a shame, as I was hoping it might sneak on to the schedule. We live in hope that this show will re-emerge at some point!

The fact that the pirate queen has got a concert and this hasn't is crazy haha Yeah, I know, right? I mean, has anybody actually listened to the OLC recording recently? Those strings - this score screams "concert" at the very least. I know it got scaled back in subsequent versions but surely this deserves an airing of some sort.

I hardly think ‘setting fire to the whole stage’ counts as scaled back 🤣 (But God I hated that production)

I hardly think ‘setting fire to the whole stage’ counts as scaled back 🤣 (But God I hated that production) I will always love the original original... The fire was a bit of a gimmick in an otherwise soulless production, though I did like Jo Riding. The orchestrations were weedy in the WYP version. I just feel the score, orchestra and Prince Edward theatre worked. (Even if the automated timber towers didn't always work!) I think the timing was wrong, off the back of the blockbuster hits that defined the decade leading up to MG, and that a reimagined production now would do quite well! Or a concert at the very least...

A date of October 2024 is being bandied around for a new production of Martin Guerre. Can anybody in the know confirm?
