I think a new Sheffield high has been reached. For tonight's performance, there is a single seat in the stalls available for £70, or 'only' £67.50 for concessions! What a steal! Going to have kids queueing round the block!

Much as I'd like to gloss over Layton Williams... I'm intrigued. His "reputation" precedes him.

He was much better than the new Jamie I saw earlier this year and from clips I've seen of the original Jamie he ran rings around him too. Must be a social media thing, which is why I don't follow social media.

Some friends in the business say he’s a right diva ?? Maybe that why Also A friend interviewed him while in hairspray and said he didn’t come over to well ... make of that what you will I’d be very surprised if he came anywhere near John the original Jamie ..... booked for later in the run so I shall see for myself 👍

I will admit I found his Jamie a lot more unlikeable compared to the new one, but I actually think that added to the character in the 2nd half and made his 'growing up' more affecting.

Well, opening night began with a round of applause, before a single word had been spoken, and ended, predictably, with an instant standing ovation. 1,068 selfish people! 😉 Amy Ellen Richardson was the star of the Crucible's Kiss Me, Kate! and, for my money, she's the real star of this too, with 'He's My Boy' deservedly receiving the loudest applause of the night. Imagine singing such a moving song for the first time on home turf? I expected to really dislike Shane Richie, but I was very pleasantly surprised, much as I was with CHF in Les Miserables. Clearly, I need to take a long hard, look at my preconceptions! He's not the best MT singer, but he can certainly act the part, and has bags of charm. Much as I'd like to gloss over Layton Williams, in a review of Jamie I suppose I must, briefly, mention him. John McCrae always struck me as a modest, thoughtful actor, almost shy. None of those adjectives apply to Layton Williams. Although they never really managed it, the OG did at least attempt a Sheffield accent. Apart from the occasional 'nowt' or 'mek up', this lot don't even try! Very smooth for the first public performance, bar a few sound issues. At one point I had a man in black standing next to me with a laptop, and when I went for a wander during the interval, there was a small conference taking place. I wonder what the collective noun is for tech people? Slightly longer than the advertised running time, but that does seem to be the norm at Sheffield Theatres. Act I was 1 hour 25 minutes, which is a long time to be sitting in the cheap seats at the Lyceum, a 20 minute interval, and 1 hour 10 minutes for Act II. Ended at 10.40pm. I just happened to pass the stage door on my way home. Sheffield has never seen anything like it!!! Where there any changes to the show in terms of set design?

Where there any changes to the show in terms of set design? None that jumped out at me, but I don't pretend to be an expert. Plus, I was sitting upstairs, under the overhang of the balcony, so couldn't see all the set anyway.

I’m going (for the second time in this run) on Saturday 29th in the cheap seats (row L circle) and thought I might treat myself to an upgrade as failing eyesight made it impossible to see too much detail on my first visit. Like you Paul, there was one seat in the stalls for £65, so I’ve decided to stick with the blurred vision. Proud Sheffielder that I am, it was so much better at The Crucible as the Lyceum must be one of the smallest stages around, with such a steep rake, you almost expect the desks to slide down into the audience.

I don't know what has been happening at Stage Door, but a notice has now appeared stating that the cast will only make themselves available for a max of 15 minutes, and setting out a few house rules - basically be ready, be nice and don't be greedy.

I am seeing this at the Lowry later in the year, but I have to say I'm not too thrilled about seeing Layton. I hope I'll be proven wrong.

I thought I wasn't going to be seeing this in Edinburgh due to the high prices, but it turns out my school had arranged a trip, and they had a spare ticket, so I snapped it up. £9, which is really good, especially for school/group rate on a big musical.

Venue Cymru have just emailed to say Layton won't be appearing on the day we are booked (9th May) and to contact them if we want a refund or to change the booking. Well be staying with our chosen date. Adam Taylor will be doing both performances that day.

No disrespect but does anyone outside of the MT niche even know who he is?

Edit: Apologies, they are not offering refunds but you can shift your booking to another night when he is performing. Sorry for confusion.

Try getting me to stay late at work...the reaction would be similar and a lot less passive aggressive!

Show was fantastic this afternoon. It took a little while to get going, but once we got introduced to Hugo/Loco I was hooked. Full principal cast were on, and I'd say the standout was Amy Ellen Richardson as Margaret - brilliant voice and gave a really emotional performance in act 2. Shobna Gulati stole every scene she was in.
I wasn't totally sold on Layton. He was great at acting the part - very sassy and defensive, but you could tell he was using this as a facade to hide his insecurities, but I was a bit disappointed with his vocals. He seemed to be struggling, and cracked quite a few times throughout and was very quiet in Wall in My Head. He must've been having an off day.
Front row upper circle seat was great, especially for the price I paid on the school rate. It said on the ticket that it was restricted view, but I think this is due to the safety rail which didn't affect anything in the slightest.
Walked past stage door on the way to the bus, and there seemed to be quite a few people waiting, I suppose mainly for Layton and Shane.

I went back this afternoon as my friend had a spare ticket and offered it to me for free, so I jumped at the chance. I've really lucked out with the Edinburgh week after originally not being able to see it at all due to the prices.
Layton was significantly better today, he must've been saving his energy for the weekend, as he was genuinely really good vocally today compared to Thursday. The rest of the cast were equally as impressive, Amy's He's My Boy made me cry again.
Went to stage door afterwards and was lucky enough to see Layton, Shane, Amy, Shobna, Lara, Sharun, George, Jodie and Jessica who were all lovely and had lots of time for the mob waiting. Layton politely asked if people would form an orderly queue for him, which worked as people did this immediately, probably out of respect, or fear of him walking off. For everyone else though, it was a bit of a free-for-all, but luckily the Festival has plenty of space at stage door, unlike other Edinburgh theatres.

Prior to Covid, the Jamie tour had no UK dates beyond Salford at the end of July, followed by a fortnight in Amsterdam.
If Nottingham is representative of the other lost dates, the tour, once resumed, will be extending well into the Autumn...as things currently stand.
In fact, the rearranged Nottingham date coincides with the scheduled release date of the film, though of course that may well change. At least it's not Leeds that gets the honour! 😉
