Surprised that RSC don't have skin in the game on this film - can't see them in any of the credits so far. Would have thought they might welcome the income.

It looks OK but the trailer didn't excite me to be honest. I'll catch it on Netflix but probably won't rush to cinema to see it

I just think it’s a real shame that none of the original cast will be in the film. Some of that may be due to actors not wanting to revisit it in film form, but I do know that not all of them were asked or even invited to audition.

Lauren Ward is just too old to play Miss Honey now to be honest, especially on film. They couldn’t have Bertie Carvel because I guess they decided the part of Miss Trunchbull being done “in drag” on film wouldn’t really work like it does on stage. The two who played the parents would have the same issue as Lauren Ward I’d think; they’d look too old to have a child of 5-7 years old. The only person from the original main cast who could probably still play the same role would be Mrs Phelps, was that Melanie La Barrie originally? |

The poster looks so poor in my opinion .. yet the trailer seems intriguing(:, the musical songs are enjoyable so I’m sure I’ll watch

Yes, Melanie La Barrie was the original Ms Phelps ( she’s shortly off to Broadway with &Juliet I think). I take your point about ages, but respectfully disagree. The whole story is a fantasy so I’m not sure that in all the roles, that would have mattered. My kids never seem to notice people’s ages if they’re engrossed in a film or TV show. Wasn’t there some talk of Benedict Cumberbatch playing Trunchbull at one point? Personally I don’t see the problem of this role being played in drag on film, but maybe that’s just me? Changing the subject completely, I really didn’t love the bit in the trailer where the kids are all dressed up in glittery jackets. It reminded me of Everybody’s Talking about Jamie, which to me most definitely didn’t work as a movie. I hope Matilda isn’t going to follow suit. |

It's likely because Sony has the screen rights so they couldn't have the RSC involved as producer but I imagine they'll get royalties given it's based on the stage musical. Matilda already has a previous book to film adaptation so the jump from stage to film isn't going to be as strange compared to other shows. |

I had completely forgot that Stephen Graham was in this! He is one of my favorite actors so it's making me look forward to this even more.
This being one of my favorite musicals, I'm not completely blown away by the trailer but I'm sure I'll still love it regardless.
I wish Bertie had been cast as Trunchbull as he is hands down the best to ever play the role but I'm sure Emma will still ace it.

Just back from the Gala at London Film Festival. This was such a treat, lovely to see so many enthralled kids in the audience. The cuts to the book have left the non-Trunchbull adults underserved (especially when you have such incredible cast as Andrea Riseborough and Stephen Graham) but the children are very very good and Lashana Lynch was excellent as Miss Honey. Loved the inventive staging of some of the show’s stand out numbers - don’t want to spoil but there’s some fun surprises and cast in minor roles I hadn’t realised I’d see. Really enjoyed this and can’t wait to see it again!

I would recommend people check their local non chain cinemas. I casually checked HOMEmcr Cinema and there is a screening this saturday 😍😍😍 Glad to see local cinemas are getting s head start after the pandemic  Cannot wait to watch on saturday |

I'm waiting until it's released at the end of November but I'm assuming much like the musical, it's much closer to the book than the 1996 adaptation.

Its unbelievably joyful and uplifting.
Great cast - Emma Thompson is BRILLIANT. I wouldn't be surprised if she got a best supporting actress nom. She goes all in, and god can she sing - Smell of Rebellion in particular a powerhouse vocal. Lashana Lynch really warm and lovely. Sindhu Vee as Mrs Phelps iconic in every scene she's in. The girl playing Matilda holds her own so well (I hate kids but they are without exception brilliant - loved Bruce)
Some cut songs - Loud is gone, so has Telly. The brother doesn't exist. Family role much smaller, but it works.
There are moments in the stage production that are unbelievably iconic that I couldn't picture how they'd do in screen, or how they'd match them. Without exception, the screen supersedes the stage version. I didn't think you could improve on the musicals When I Grow Up, but they've done it.
New finale number, which had me and my friends weeping. It's just an absolute joy.
The ultimate strength of the film is that it was made by the people who made the musical. Dennis Kelly, Tim Minchin and Matthew Warchus understand this material so microscopically that it just...works. They just get it perfectly and so it all works. Warchus has made an utterly brilliant film, that's going to do so well.
I loved it, as did the 500 school kids who were in this morning's screening. Reminded me just how good musicals really are. It'll be an introduction to musicals for a while new generation and that's only a positive. It's going to be a smash and I can't wait to see it again.

^Cutting Telly makes sense as well as Loud although I assume Miracle is still there.
