Oooo, this is a favourite film of mine, so I will be interested to see what they do with it!

Eh? The Bord Gais love a musical based on a film, dont they? Big The Musical anyone? I imagine this will be the same standard...

Glad to see Alexandra originate a role.
I'm sure it'll be good fun and she certainly has the pipes to do the score justice.

But it's only a weeks run... Is this not just part of a tour?

But it's only a weeks run... Is this not just part of a tour? It looks like another co-prod between Theatre Royal Plymouth and Bord Gais, which is exactly what Big was. Haha. Shan't be seeing it... We don't need this kind of crap in the UK theatre scene. UPDATE: Its being produced by David Ian and Michael Harrison. David Ian is has done the Annie tour, Cats and the upcoming production of Hello Dolly! - so eesh. Who knows. Don't have much hope for Hello Dolly if it's producers are doing this crap.

Your comment is a bit daft to be fair. You haven’t seen it. Nobody has. How can it be crap when it doesn’t exist yet? David Ian and Michael Harrison are pretty savvy; try not to be too disappointed if it turns out to be good.

No Wimbledon, Bromley, Dartford, Woking or Canterbury dates in 2020, alas. It will have to be a trip to Plymouth or Manchester for me.

I think many musicals based on straight films are crap. Regardless of who is producing or directing tbh. AND this is a juke-boxofcrap musical. Can't stand Alexandra Burke either. Where are the original ideas?!?!?!

I'll be interested to see what kind of arrangements they use for the songs though. I have zero hope for this, but as ever, I will happily be proved wrong.

There is no doubt about the quality of the Bacharach and David back catalogue, that's for sure, so wouldn't it be better to use it for a new, original story, rather than the 'musicalisation' of a moderately success film from 22 years ago? Although their songs are largely timeless, they stopped writing together long before 1997, so their work isn't even contemporary to the period.
It's easy for me because my money isn't at stake, but perhaps the answer to the question posed in a different thread is there are no flops anymore, because (almost) nobody takes a risk anymore!

I feel like Bacharach songs are done to death and i'm bored of them. yes, I Say A Little Prayer is in the film, but to then shoehorn his other songs in seems un-necessary.

I’d prefer a revival of Promises, Promises.

The Bridges of Madison County is based on the novel rather than the film so doesn't count. La Cage Aux Folles is also based on the original French play as they couldn't secure the rights to adapt the film version. I would add Kinky Boots, Hairspray and Groundhog Day to the list of critically acclaimed musicals based on films.

Ok maybe I needed to have been a bit more clear, musicals that are translated straight from their movie context onto stage without any thought, which is more than likely what this is going to be. Also, films that dont have anything to do with music, suddenly becoming a musical! Often a jukebox musical. Thats the worst. Let's take Pretty Woman or Mamma Mia. Terrible! Some of the musicals you've mentioned arent that. They are "inspired by" or "adapted" and don't share the same name as their film movie inspiration. Totally different. I hate people putting words in my mouth.
I have also edited my comment from before to say "many musicals based on straight films are crap" It probably was rather sweeping before but hey; I am opinionated.

Groundhog Day, haven't seen it.
