Watched the BBC2 showing. Really liked it a lot - proper Broadway dance musical. I also now see why it could never run in the West End. Far too New York specific in every way - it would close in weeks, I'd think. Shame as it is a quality show, but not one that travels well, I fear. I'd happily see a scaled down version like the ArtsEd production I saw, earlier this year. It was incredible 💖 As much as the set is pretty amazing for the Broadway production, you don't need it for the show to work. The material is strong enough for it not to need it x

Watching on BBC2 now. Incredible.
God knows why this never made it to London. Great melodies. Spectacular automated set and lighting. Breathtaking choreography. (I guess all the other recent Broadway imports are cheaper).
One of my favourite Menken scores. And whilst I don't doubt it's a somewhat sanitised version of what was no doubt quite a grim fight, think it has more substance and less sentiment than Menken's usual saccharine sweet fare.
And who wouldn't fancy Jeremy Jordan....

A few years back I was talking to one of the Broadway cast who said the problem was they couldn't get a suitable theatre. Think there were even auditions run here at one point.

I loved it. Great story (I had never heard of the strike before this musical), songs I found myself singing along to (sometimes not being in the theatre has its advantages) and really energetic dancing (I can understand why American sometimes complain that West End musicals lack the energy of Broadway musicals).
Out of the 3 musicals I've watched during lockdown, "Curtains", "Love Never Dies" and "Newsies", this was by far the best.

I also heard somewhere that it was thought there were not enough "triple threat" young Male actors in the UK to cast. Dont know how much truth there is in that.

What about all those ex-Billy Elliots out there, and all the graduates that just need giving a chance? Jac Yarrow was ‘plucked out of nowhere’ to be Joseph so it stands to reason there are a couple in every class, in every drama school.
What they actually mean is that there aren’t enough bankable, already famous triple threats in the mainstream to make it financially viable. If Tom Holland could make himself available, even for just three months to open it up, it could be the impetus required....and at the Prince Edward obviously. It’d be perfect.

As I understand it they did 'exploratory auditions' in London but weren't satisfied there was a sustainable amount of dance talent to keep it going long enough at the best quality (it's a v physical show so presumably suffers a lot from injury and regular cast changes). I also wonder if there was worry about brand recognition, the original film is virtually unknown here, as is the term 'newsie', as is the real life event it's based upon, and even the show itself is hardly known here now.

Only watched a couple of bits of the recent broadcast (as I was working, and still have it recorded from Xmas anyway). But did catch the end, and watching the curtain calls and the audience reaction really quite upset me. The rush of being in a theatre, and being part of a big audience, all standing and cheering having just watched a brilliant musical, is one of the best feelings there is, and I miss it so much and wonder if I’ll ever feel it again.

And the irony here is that Arts Ed did the European premiere that was so impressive not only did Disney execs come to see it, it made the national press and starred a Jac Yarrow...

It’s on Disney+ if you have that!! If any board member who has Disney + who has downloaded it and is willing to share it with a fellow board member who (still) has a man-crush on Jeremy Jordan, who has been to two of his concerts and met him, that would be greatly appreciated.

As I understand it the lack of triple threats was made up by Disney Theatrical as they only wanted to produce the show if they could bring only an American cast. Hence the lackluster open casting call being the only way to be seen for it.
There were rumours of one of the major youth theatre groups doing it in london in the past few years but think talks stalled.
