I think this could be genius casting! LOVE Imelda!
Also lol at Carl Woodward once again stealing other people’s info (and artwork!) to state something as fact when nothing is official yet (even if it seems v likely) 🙄

I’m sorry but Imelda is too classic and strong - you need a cheek unconventional actor to play dolly. Of course Stanton is a great actor but we need someone more quirky. Thumbs down from me Idk, I think Imelda is a super versatile actress, and has played many quirky / comedy roles during her career. I’d honestly take her over Bette 😆

Thumbs down from me First time I saw Imelda on stage was the National Theatre production of Guys and Dolls (1996) where Imelda played Miss Adelaide and knocked it out of the park for her cheeky and flirty performance. Hello Dolly at the Open Air Theatre in Regents Park (2009) was simply delightful. Coming back for the 2nd act as night fell to the beautifully lit stage stays with me. Thumbs up from me.

Whoever plays the lead,it is just wonderful news that the show itself will be back where it belongs, lighting up even further the already glittering WE😀

And a horribly plausible dummy of Nicholas Parsons that was dropped from the flies onto the apron halfway through the second act.
I don't think I've ever seen a better production of Into The Woods. Certainly the original Broadway production, on DVD, can't touch it.

Yes that production was a work of genius. Brilliantly conceived and designed. Julia McKenzie was sublime.. oh how I miss her being in musicals

And the cookoo clock on the outside of the theatre.
For years, the cuckoo clock lived on in a stairwell in the now-defunct Honest Ed's discount department store at the corner of Bloor and Bathurst in Toronto (it was owned by David and Ed Mirvish, who produced the original London production of Into the Woods). It was quite a surprise to see it the first time I went in there.

I think Imelda in Dolly is a great thing - and I think it would be even more fun if Jim Carter was her Horace. Sure it's gimmicky casting, but if he weren't her husband it would be clever.

I saw the Bette Midler run on Broadway and absolutely loved it. As mentioned further up the thread, Dolly is a showcase for a star and works best when she’s full of personality and has a quirkiness. Bette has this in droves, and I just don’t feel Imelda Staunton has the same qualities. She’s brilliant, but I’m just not excited by the idea of her playing Dolly.
Why not someone more left field with a comedy background who’s a bigger name with the general public? Maybe someone like Celie Imrie?

Ive never seen a Hello Dolly but I thought it was supposed to be played by someone with a huge, over the top even camp appeal. Imelda is just a bit... well. Ordinary.

Hoping this is the recent Broadway production. I don't think it can be bettered in terms of design and production values. Maybe Patti can replace and do the role over in England since she loves London so much and also since apparently Jerry Herman has barred her from doing it in the States. I love Imelda and love the idea of her doing this great classic role - let's not forget before she was a musical comedy heroine, Dolly was one of those great 'straight' female roles (The Matchmaker) - and why not?

@deuces99 it's a new production, although I agree I'm not sure the recent US production can be bettered in terms of style and direction. Will be interesting to see though.
