Saw this at the weekend - winner of the Papatango New Writing prize which seems to have a good hit rate. Thought it was excellent. Three teenagers in a young offenders' institution have signed up for parenting classes as they have babies on the outside, gradually reveals the reasons they are in there and the lack of opportunities they would have on the outside Rave review from the Guardian here - www.theguardian.com/stage/2019/nov/08/shook-review-southwark-playhouseOnly a week left at Southwark and it's sold out for the rest of the run, but it's touring till early December to Liverpool, Theatre Clwyd Mold, Scarborough and Canterbury. This is Samuel Bailey's first play, be very interesting to see what he does next. |

Nice to see this getting a West End home. Missed it at Southwark, but reports were uniformly excellent.

Great news. Best thing I saw last year. Not on their website yet but looks like it's Trafalgar Studios 2 from 8th April to 9th May www.londontheatre1.com/shows/shook-at-trafalgar-studios/Doesn't say it's Studio 2 on the website but On Blueberry Hill is in Studio 1 until May. Hope they manage to get the original cast back. |

This is a necessary revival, and everyone should catch it, as it was electric at the Southwark Playhouse. The cast were on fire, disguising so much vulnerability with so much machismo, such that your heart breaks for them. Even if you feel you've been told this story a thousand times before, about prisoners needing more than mere punishment, here it's told better. It's a terrific study of three different character types, jostling for respect, with the withdrawn Josef Davies, braggart Josh Finan and assertive Ivan Oyik demonstrating beautifully their character's different adaptations in surviving horrible experiences. And the positioning of the title word "shook," in this piece, is the most perfectly placed title word ever. Absolutely, see this!  PS: I sat next to the playwright's family at the Southwark, and asked them to pass on my congratulations, because this production is unmissable. |

Just finished watching the online stream of this tonight. An absolutely fantastic piece of theatre both in its writing by Samuel Bailey and performances from the 3 male actors playing the young offenders.
At times heartbreaking to watch as the play develops as you see 3 wisecracking inmates and young fathers and their individual issues and despair exposed and explored in the institute.
A play that at around 90 minutes that keeps you fully engaged and is a roller-coaster of emotion, I'd highly recommend giving this a watch at £10 a ticket.

Samuel Bailey has been nominated for a Times breakthrough award and was profiled on the South Bank Show on Sky Arts last night - the full play was screened, without ads, on Sky Arts too, and I suppose this streaming is relate to that (?). If it does come back live, it is well worth catching, because the film - which is very powerful - doesn't have an audience (obviously) and I did miss the audience laughter and gasps.
