Does anyone know of any plays about Jane Austen, in the vein of Polly Teale's glorious Bronte?

Not about Austen per se, but I highly recommend the improvised comedy play Austentatious, all done in the style and language of Austen

Not sure that Austen herself had a life that lends itself to a dramatic telling on stage - her life seems to have been relatively quiet and self-contained
Which might explain why she, herself, doesn't really feature in popular culture

There are a couple of screen representations of Austen’s life, a BBC TV dramatisation of her later life called ‘Miss Austen Regrets’ and a less historically faithful film version of her as a young woman called ‘Becoming Jane’. I don’t know of any major stage biography, though.

The musical 'Austen's Pride' apparently depicts Jane Austen during the time of writing 'Pride and Prejudice', although it sounds as though there might be more focus on depicting the P&P story than on Austen's own life.

Looks like news will be coming soon.... I sure hope so, because I have been putting off fixing the dates for my spring theater trip to London until there is an announcement about a West End transfer of The Watsons! (Thanks to this site, I have signed up on the Menier’s website to be notified of a transfer, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still check this site compulsively for any news.) |

Thanks for all that, chums. Actually I saw Austentatious last week, and my suggestion, Lady Typewriter's Carriage Returns, got performed and a very jolly complex affair it was too. But all this was prompted by a wonderful experience of directing Bronte earlier this year. artistically a great success but sadly few people came. Maybe it's time to write such a play.

On the off chance that wasn’t meant as a joke: I would love to see The Watsons at the Menier, but the run there is completely sold out and has only one more week to go, so a West End transfer is the only option for a spring theatre trip. |
