Having been very closely involved in a production of it, I still have much affection for it, but really Verdi made a better job of it, though the final scene, for all its emotion is still pushing the suspension of disbelief......stopping singing when you are suffocating in a tomb!

I can’t imagine Aida coming to London unless it’s a limited run and I imagine Disney don’t want to oversaturate the market with another show since they’ll have Lion King, Mary Poppins and Frozen by the end of next year

^Well, that's the poster strapline done at least. It’s not wrong though is it? 😂Stick it in the Coliseum with a huge orchestra could make it a touch more thrilling. Not a lot, but that score...woof!

I saw this show in 2000 and for me this was THE show of my trip! I (simply) LOVED it! I still listen to the CD today. Have the souvenir brochure and the hardback book.
(I believe) it's scheduled for The Colessuim next year.

The music is fantastic, but the spoken scenes in between are not very well written (and acted). I wish it would be sung through. That would lift this show to another level I think.

Well it looks like they are re-writing the book. I agree that the music fantastic (I saw it in 2000? 2001?) and didn't pay attention to the book because it IS quite a beautiful show. The design was great and the singing is even better. But I recently saw an audience capture and was listening to the dialogue and picked up on how pedestrian it was.

Personally I love this show and thrilled at this news. I saw the original cast on Broadway on 2000 on our last night. I was travelling with a friend. We bought a ticket on a whim, with no idea about the show, who was in it, the music or the story. All I know was that it was an opera. But this is a stage musical I remember when we bought the tickets- we were in the 'Gods", so high up we need to catch an elevator- well it Elton John and Time Rice, how bad could it be? And it was great! It is show that I (truly) have never forgotten. The way 'My Strongest Suit' was stages was just sensational! Another great cast recording/score lumbered with a thankless book. Great visuals and the John/Rice pedigree will give it extra mileage. I‘d expect it to take a slot at the ENO if theres a space between Hairspray and actual Opera next year starring the magnificent Danielle Steers hopefully. This is great news.

2004. I didn't really know much about the show itself, only that Deborah Cox was in it, and she had recorded a dance version of 'Easy As Life', remixed by Tony Moran, probably my favourite DJ ever. A track that had me on the dance floor all that year. I still listen to that remix and it brings me such joy, remembering all the great times that went with it. Songs from musicals rarely work as a dance track, but for me, this ticks all the boxes. I saw Deborah Cox and Will Chase in Aida and both were fantastic. Such great voices singing a great score. But as mentioned above, the book was not good and just dragged along. I've only seen it once, so it will be great to see it again to get a fresh perspective.

Given it has never had a production in the West End or the UK, wouldn't it technically count as a new show awards wise? Dreamgirls despite being 35 years old was considered a new musical when it was nominated for an Olivier.

I think that any show that has not had a UK production before, should be counted as a new musical. How you would you judge when something is no longer 'new'?
I believe there was a discussion about Dreamgirls being considered in the revival category, but that makes no sense for a UK audience.

I saw it twice in the Netherlands and three times in Germany, one of those a non-replica open-air production.
It's a great show with a great score and it's beyond me why it was never shown in London. I also don't think the book is bad - yes, it's a typical overwrought melodramatic opera plot, but there are so many wonderful bits and pieces in it. At the end of the day it's told as Amneris' story here, her journey from ditzy blonde princess to benign mature ruler. I also like the "frame" of the museum that makes the opera ending less depressing.
And yes, Danielle Steers MUST play Aida or I'll riot.
That said, I don't think it's written in stone, all the interview says it was meant to "hopefully go to Broadway and West End" and how many shows have said that?

I saw it when I was in college with the original cast. Heather Headley was a force to be reckoned with. The score is terrific (great treadmill music, btw), the concept was fabulous, and it was incredibly fresh and original back in the day. I didn't really take much notice of the book back then, but having seen bits and bobs recently on YouTube, it seems pretty clunky and cringe. It could use a bit of a new pair of eyes. There's a bit of white-redemption, white savior complex AND magical blackness going on around here. It could easily go haywire and be outdated if not treated with someone who is in touch with the cultural shift we're experiencing right now. Appointing Schelle Williams as director was the right thing to do from the get-go. I echo viserys when it comes to the casting of Danielle Steers. There's no point in casting sub-par singers in this show. I also think that a West End premiere, though possible, is in no way certain at all. It was announced and confirmed for Papermill prior to a US tour. And if that kind of programming is off the table, I would not hold my breath for an off the cuff remark from an interview. It seems to be confirmed that Germany is going to be the premier. I'd focus on where in Germany as a next milestone instead of holding my breath for London news.

It's a line in an extensive interview with Schele Williams, who was meant to direct the revival at Papermill Playhouse, which has come to nothing due to Corona. " The new Aida was supposed to start at Paper Mill, then do a national tour, and then go to Germany (and hopefully Broadway and the West End). So where and when Aida might even fit in, is everyone's guess.

Tim Rice has also mentioned he and Elton had been working on the revival and that they had hoped it would come to the West End at last.
Of course all bets are off now.
I’ve never seen it - I do recall that duet of Written In The Stars by Elton and LeAnn Rimes being on hard rotation on Magic FM of an evening, though. Takes me right back to having the radio on while I was doing my A Level homework.
