So this totally passed me by in 2000 (had a 5 year ish period where I forgot about musicals as I was generally in Heaven and/or Vauxhall clubland instead....) but based on above posts bought the CD from Amazon.
Story clearly ludicrous, and if all McShane's songs were cut would be no great loss (character so creepy, plus never liked this whole "speak singing" - i.e. NOT singing - that some actors do).
But that aside, a good find. Some catchy choons, a 32 piece orchestra (when does that ever happen now) and MT's finest Maria Friedman/Joanna Riding/Rosemarie Ashe and a very young Caroline Sheen.... kitsch and ridiculous; what's not to love? (Other than the plot).

The novel makes it quite clear what they signify. They are totems of the awakening of female power in a male dominated world - a power that essentially goes to their head and shows that power corrupts and its not only men that are bastards. Hardly "quite clear", I should have thought. It may have started out somewhat as you describe, but it seems to me to lose its way, with various ideas and suggestions and plot moves colliding with one another. I can't say more than that. I've read it three times and very much wanted to find an interesting line such as you describe, and was disappointed when I couldn't. |

I saw a (terrible quality) bootleg video of the London production, albeit with the second cast (Jo Riding and Rosemary Ashe from the first cast, plus Rebecca Thornhill, Josefina Gabrielle and Clarke Peters), and despite the poor video quality, I enjoyed it a lot. The overall silliness, witty, high-energy choreography, some good belting numbers... what's not to love? It felt as a show that doesn't take itself too seriously, so I don't really see it as either sexist or a story about female friendship and loyalty, but rather like a wild, slightly rude romp - kind of like an extended version of that Midsummer Night's Dream scene when everyone starts showing their most embarrassing, horny, animalistic sides - with its only purpose being to entertain.

Front row seats booked! cannot wait, was my first west end show I saw so has a very special place in my heart.
Also does anyone have any other info on the backstage drama of original cast, throughout the years I have always heard it alluded to but no more and I love a bit of drama!

It's funny that some shows like this where I only saw it once I remember very little about. The only memorable thing was the flying sequence. Don't remember one song from it at all.

I’ve waited so long for this! Very happy memories of seeing the original London production multiple times… Wonder what combination of songs they are going to use? I remember hearing about backstage tensions at the time (though it was never evident on stage) and by all accounts the second cast were a much happier bunch.

Can’t wait to see it again. I hope Maria reinstates Loose Ends (which was originally her big second act solo) - it was cut from subsequent productions and I always miss it.

I saw the original production at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
At the time it was my first solo trip to Europe alone and (again, at the time) I had managed to pre-book my ticket from Australia 🇦🇺 on this new thing called the Internet. I was amazed that I was able to do so.
I have the cast recording and still have pretty vivid memories of most of the show- not all, but most.

I hope Rosie Ashe is back for this. She is always great value.
I very much enjoyed the original production. There are some great tunes. The plot is a bit creaky but it is still entertaining
