I was sure there would be a thread for this but I can't find one, so apologies if it is buried somewhere way back.
All the reviews I had seen were raves yet on the two previous occasions, years apart, when I had seen the play, I hadn't been that impressed so I had decided that this London revival was its last chance so far as I was concerned, for all its fame. Now I'm very glad I did see it for that third and crucial time as although there are still some elements which grate, it was really well done and worthwhile.
Some of the reasons for the play's reputation are that the author, Charlotte Keatley, was only 25 when she wrote it; it's the most-performed play ever by a female playwright; it has been translated into and performed in other languages and is on exam syllabi and is for an entirely female cast - so it's pretty significant and remarkable in itself.
As if the play and production were not enough, one of the four parts has just been taken over by Hilary Tones, who today was appearing only for the second time yet managed amazingly and was warmly applauded, as was the whole cast, the others being Maureen Lipman, Katie Brayben and Serena Manteghi.
All in all, well worth seeing and it was encouraging to see an almost-full house.

I was going to book seats for this some weeks ago before it began the run, but thought all the seats left were too expensive. It's a venue I have been to for plays half a dozen times at least and have mostly chosen well, though it has always largely depended on what my money could stretch to. I have been pleased to read some nice reviews for this production, so am confident that those attending will have enjoyed themselves.

peelee, there might well be offers; I just think it has been too soon for these so far. It's noticeable with this venue that the cheaper seats go first (I booked a £15 one but the view was fine) and that as these tend to be at the very front, rear and sides, there's a big chunk of more central seats unsold, ripe for discounting.

Thanks, showgirl, I'll bear that in mind and look out for any deals that could get offered.

I went to see this play last night, but sadly had to leave as a poor woman fell down the stairs during the interval. The second act was delayed as an ambulance was sent for. Though they could take forever to come and even then they won't take the injured woman straight away. I then decided to leave as many others were as well. A shame, but I was told to contact the box office for another date to see the play. I just hope the woman is okay.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often at the St James as those stairs are quite vertigo-inducting...

Those stairs, I was thinking the same as I was walking down them that someone could easily slip. At work on Monday I had to deal with the postman who fell down the stairs whilst delivering the post. He looked like he'd gone a few rounds with Tyson.
I'm trying to work out when I can re book this show during May as I would like to know the ending.

The stairs are particularly bad as they are not all the same....so you can't get into a rhythm at all when walking down them. Some of the worst I have come across! And then it is also possible to shoot down a nasty gap when pushing past peole's legs to try and get to your seat! I am always extra careful here as I am naturally quite clumsy....I currently bear bruises from tripping up the escalator at Marylebone while rushing for the train....
