I got the impression it was a male strip show a bit like the Chippendales rather than a musical?

It seems to be a stripping revue with some acrobatics, so I guess it counts more as dance than musical? Should we ask this thread to be moved to Opera & Dance?

I might get a bit of stick for this from some people, but how is it right that it is ok for men to be topless and dancing while being sexually ogled by mainly women but if it was the other way round there’s would be outrage is seen as vastly inappropriate. It baffles me. Because the mens are pretty. Dance boys, DANCE!

I'm feeling rather proud of starting a thread that has not only had its title changed since I originally posted, but- I am reliably informed- has been moved not once but twice, from Musicals, then to Opera and Dance, and now to General Chat.
From the (completely inappropriate) taster we got on BGT last night, I'd say that it does indeed look as if it sits most comfortably in General Shat.

Evening Standard says they have sold 15,000 tickets and taken over 1 million pounds in advance booking.

Question - do we think the audience will be only women - where men (of the variety that like other men) would feel out of place?
I want to go, but don't want to be the only gay person lol

It baffles me. I literally walk past a lap dancing club every day on the way to and from the office. It’s next to Tesco. When it first opened there were occasionally a few protestors sitting outside, but they stopped after a few weeks. Outrage?! Pull the other one, luv.

Can I have a 'crap celeb spot' of the day in that I once saw Peter Stringfellow by actual Stringfellows?
Anyhoo, as a RABID feminist (not to be confused with a Rabbit one) I have zero objection to Magic Mike and his chums nor do I particularly have a specific objection to strip shows/clubs in general. With a caveat that everyone involved isn't being exploited abused etc etc and goes into it willingly. Frankly if someone paid me good money to dance about in my underwear then in my case more fool them, but also why the hell not?
Also a lot of my learned friends (more learned than me) consider the MM franchise to be hella feminist anyway- a turning the tables, distorting the sterotypes type thing. NOW a lot of you know I LOVE a dance film, and I lay claim to 'discovering' Mr Tatum in such before everything else. BUT MM films bored me senseless. Which I now conclude is because I'm just far too gay for them.
Anyway, short version, you ladies (and gents) who want to ogle some talent go ahead, and fair play to some canny producers for making that much money off it I say.

The interesting thing about the Magic Mike films is the difference between the first and second film. The first film isn’t really interested in stripping as a subject matter - the main character wants to get out of stripping, the guys are only in it for the money and to get easy sex, it’s kinda suggested that the young guy who becomes a stripper is being pulled into a murky underworld, and the real meat of the film is about drugs, about relationships, etc etc.
The second film does a complete turnabout - it’s about the guys wanting to strip, and the reasons they want to strip - and a big part of that is that they enjoy performing, and particularly performing for women. It’s an explicitly female-focused film and actually celebrates sexuality as something women actively enjoy rather than something that is done to them. And it features women of all shapes, sizes, races and ages - and not as punchlines!
It’s like the ticket sales data and audience demographic and response research turned up in some Hollywood exec’s office between the first and second film, and he (of course it would be a he) looked at it and went, ‘huh, you mean women actually like male strippers?!’

There's a magician doing the rounds who is also called Magic Mike.
I do hope a big hen party doesn't panic book quickly in error and book a night with him instead! 😉

I will twist my own arm to see them.....so easily done. Front row maybe: where I occasionally get dripped on with sweat and spit when singers and actors are in full throat....so i am up for this! .....And then an ice cream or something cool to lick in the interval.

Best not take a picnic to this one though: you don’t want one of them jabbing their groins into your tortellini! 😂 There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think of a Victoria Wood line...

And at least they won’t say womb! Oh for the days when a box of Quality Street cost two pounds. But best pack my duffle coat just in case!

Well that was fun! Those who have been before to the Hippodrome to see shows will remember how the club was set out. Its now been transformed and made bigger. The booths at the back of the room have been removed and rows of seats added and the balcony level seems to have gone back further. Stage is now much larger and comes right out into the audience. Pleased to report I was not the only man there, there were probably about a dozen or so of us scattered around the place. It starts off with a compare who frankly was dreadful, very crude and swearing all the time and I really worried what I had come to see. Fear not as it was all part of a clever act to make you feel you were going to see some tacky strip show. In fact it turns out to be a very professional and tasteful(ish) show. Music very loud and great lighting. The cast really are amazing dancers, acrobats and musicians and the whole thing is put together so well. They made sure that the whole audience were included and not just the women sitting around the front of the stage. I even got a nice shoulder massage from one of the dancers who said "you are very tense sir!" I wasn't afterwards... I was with a group of 6, 4 women and 2 men and one of the ladies seriously thought she was going to see a magic act and had never heard of Magic Mike, but they all said at the end what a great evening it was. 90 minutes with no interval went very quickly and at the weekends they do 2 shows a night. One thing that really impressed me was the work of the backstage crew, being in the right place at the right time, moving people when they needed to use a space, catching items of clothing that was thrown etc so it was all seemless. Cant say I would like to go to a Friday late show with 300 women who have been drinking for a few hours before. I am sure it could be quite rowdy. I really enjoyed it purely from an artistic point of view.... On the way out we spoke to 2 women who were sitting at the front and asked them if they enjoyed it. One said "it was ok but I was expecting so seem some d**k. I pointed out that this was a more classy show and she said "we are from up north and don't do classy". What can I say.
