It's a superb play this, written by Pam Gems but with the lead actress singing all Piaf's famous songs. It is a tour de force for the lead actress. I saw the original production with Jane Lapotaire and subsequently with Elaine Paige, and Elena Roger at the Donmar. A favourite piece for me really. It's a gritty play though and pulls no punches with language, sex and drug taking.
Tempted to take a trip to Nottingham.

A co-production with Leeds Playhouse, where it will run from 27 May to 13 June 2020.
The first few rows of the stalls are being replaced with tables (and chairs, obvs) to create a nightclub feel.

I think I may have to make a journey to get to this, loved the play with Elena Roger years ago, and combining it with Jenna Russell makes it a must-see!

I just produced Piaf in June, also in an 'immersive' setting where the entire theatre was converted into a Parisian bar. I disagree though, the text written by Pam Gems is quite pedestrian and bad. The play only works because Piaf's story is quite interesting and because of all the drug abuse and trauma you see on stage.

I agree that it's a very pedestrian play. Elena Roger turned it to magic though.

I saw this many years ago with Caroline O'Connor as Piaf. Apart from the songs, my abiding memory of this play is {Spoiler - click to view}Piaf urinating on stage!

New dates for Nottingham Playhouse are Friday 30 April to Saturday 15 May 2021. The dates for Leeds are still TBC, I think, but it will start its run the following week, surely?

Thanks, david. You'd think Leeds Playhouse would update its website if it knows the dates! ☹

Thanks, david . You'd think Leeds Playhouse would update its website if it knows the dates! ☹ Just had a look at the email I was sent from the Box Office last night about transferring my ticket over to the next dates. On the email is says Wed 20 May. On my PC calendar, this is a Thursday but the transfer date for my ticket unfortunately now clashes with another rescheduled show so I'm in the process of trying to move the ticket to the June 5 matinee.

Did you book one of the cabaret-style seats, david? If you really want to look the part, Tall & Burly Theatrical Costumiers has some 100% authentic berets in stock. Guaranteed to catch Jenna's eye, or your money back! 🙂

How about we throw in a complimentary string of onions?

The string of 🧅 will be great addition to the costume. 🇫🇷

Not at all related, but I just found here a pic of Imelda Staunton in the 1980 Nottingham Playhouse production of Piaf.

Although I do believe this should be in the "Plays" section *ehm ehm*, it has just been announced that Piaf will open in Nottingham in July:

Although I do believe this should be in the "Plays" section I blame that BurlyBeaR. It's like Standing at the Sky's Edge all over again! 🤣

Nottingham Playhouse has sensibly decided to adopt a blended approach for the Piaf schedule. The current plan is that most performances will be without social distancing, two will be with and there will also be a livestream.

Saw the Donmar transfer of this and was blown away, Elena Roger rightly won the Olivier. I love Jenna, will definitely travel to see this one.
