There will be a black Julie or Billy I’m pretty sure. They won’t cast it in the obvious way.. Rosalie etc... This is such a dull uninspired choice- they will need to majorly overhaul it to make it work for today’s audience. I saw the recent dreadful NYC production and it exposed all of the shows flaws. BITTER... Stupid comment. |

By all accounts, this production is still going ahead. Maybe they can allow people to sit 2 metres away from each other being an outdoor theatre ?!

Yes, it's a gorgeous pas de deux. I was pleased it made it into the BBC screening (for those who don't know, the programme is made up of excepts from 2 programmes the ROH streamed in October & November). Maybe now it's been given more publicity it might get included in some future Carousel productions. Though admittedly finding 2 dancers as good as Mayara Magri & Matthew Ball to dance it 8 shows a week could be difficult!

I keep thinking about who they'll get for this. I'd hoped that Hadley would get a proper production after the concert last year but he's in City of Angels. Can't lie I really would like to see Rosalie Craig play Julie though. For Billy, the only person I could kind of think is Michael Xavier but I don't know... anyone have any other ideas? The only person is Micheal Xavier? Do you know how many actor/singer males there are out there in the business the same age as him? Ok 90 percent are not as hot hahaha |

We're booked for the last week in August. I'd hoped/assumed that we'd be back to "normal" by then. I've just had an email from RPOAT saying that they're reallocating seats for our performance on a socially distanced basis. I'm not sure how it's going to work. It's an oldies Thursday matinee, so looked pretty fully booked.

Part of me was hoping this had gone away. I love the music, but the show has always been uneven and some of the content is obviously problematic. I saw the 2018 Broadway revival and it was fine, but they didn't overcome the inherent problems with the source material and I hate to say it but it just felt rather dated.
I'm sure it will be done well, but I just feel the Park could have gone for something more uplifting and fitting this summer. Maybe they're purposely looking to shake it up and freshen it like they managed so well with JCS (and tried but failed with Little Shop)?

It’s a beautiful musical.
I was very excited for the Broadway revival as I was going over that season but after hearing the changes I just thought it was a ridiculous choice.
I don’t think the show needs to change for the Me Too era. People are still abused and people still forgive, it’s part of the human condition.
I think a director can really stamp their own interpretation on the end.
I didn’t read the whole thread but saw someone complain about diverse casting. Do they not realise Audra played Carrie in Hynters Lincoln Centre Run.

It's a huge shame they wasted such incredible voices on such a lacklustre production. You can't have that kind of vocal talent and cut so much of the score! What were they thinking?
I haven't seen the show but, from what I've read and listened to, the real sticking point about the book seems to be that Billy is redeemed for seemingly having barely if at all changed, but I imagine with effective direction and acting that can be rectified without having to change the text. I don't really come to R&H shows for the book though so even if the problematic elements aren't completely solved I'll be there as long as it's sung and played well.
