I've seen 2 blog reviews already: Libby Purves (Theatrecat) has given it 4 stars but Reviewsgate rates it 3. I need more reviews to help me decide.

I saw this play on Wednesday night and thought it was pretty good. Quite a long play with three acts, total time 2 hours 45.

The Purves review convinced me, and I booked. Free Sunday afternoon so why not.

This was better than I expected but then I hadn't done much homework on it. I was expecting a farce but although there are farce elements in the second act on the whole it is closer to kitchen-sink drama. A nineteen year old grieves for his mother and fighting loneliness takes on an attractive female lodger and has to deal with the (unwanted) return of his father who abandoned the family home some years back.
The tambourine of course relates to the Salvation Army to which the boy, and his mum, belong. The action takes place in Lancashire in 1970.
Good performances from the cast of four. Despite the length, nearly three hours, this did not drag at all.
