Did anyone in their youth see the Charlie Drake comedy (?) Mister ten Percent, in which he produces a horrendously and deliberately awful play, Oh My Lord, so that it's inevitable disaster would bring in insurance money. Sound familiar? It was made a year before the Producers. I wonder if Mel Brooks ever saw this. I wonder if anyone ever saw the Charlie drake film?
