Anything by Simon Stone is an instant see for me after Yerma and Medea! Both brilliant and haunting so I cannot wait for this.

It was rumoured a few years ago there had been a falling out between Simon Stone and Rufus Norris over a project they had in development at NT, so it seems that has been fixed. I remember Glenda Jackson playing this at the Old Vic in a melodramatic Philip Prowse production - it is quite a tough play to animate.

It seems yesterday that the NT did the last production of Phedre with Helen Mirren and it was instead 2009. Where have those years gone???

There are so many plays by Racine and others the NT has never produced it seems odd to revive it again. They could even have done the Seneca version instead, the Almeida Diana Rigg version I saw is further in the past, or the Euripides version. |

It's a sure-fire banker, both on the Southbank and via NT Live. Perhaps it suggests a slightly higher risk factor elsewhere in the programming for next year ..

Presumably this will be "Phedre by Simon Stone after Racine" type of situation in which case I doubt it will be much of a big deal that it was at the national relatively recently since it won't resemble any past versions very closely.

Is this the play that Toby Stephens was in with the goldfish? He admitted later that he wasn’t as it were, ‘present’ for most of the run.

For some reason I had to miss the 1984 Cheek by Jowl Version of Andromache and I thought never mind, it will come round again, and it never did (except CbJ did a production in French later). Racine is diminished in English due to the issue of translating the verse - you might as well do the Greek/Roman originals in my view. |

It was Jonathan Miller's opening play in his Old Vic AD ship thirty odd years ago, stupidly i passed on it. Never seen it done since.

I don't think the NT needs to do Phedre again so soon, no matter who wants to do it. They presented an unusual production of Berenice many years ago -- 1990 -- with Lindsay Duncan, which I quite liked, directed by Tim Albery. That's due for a revival. Britannicus would also be a good choice.

Agreed that there are many plays to choose from but I wouldn’t say 10 years is too soon. Many young theatregoers like myself would’ve missed the last production so to have it staged again now opens more opportunities and gives creatives a chance to revamp and revitalise dramatic gems like these.
I do kind of hope it is in the Dorfman though. Having an actor with as intense a presence as Ms Scott-Thomas in such an intimate space makes a ticket worth the price. Looking forward to joining the queue!
