Transfers from the Brockley Jack to the Charing Cross Theatre where it will run from 15th August to 5th October. Michael John LaChiusa's musical is based on the true story of Anna Edson Taylor, who in 1901 on her 63rd birthday set out to be the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel of her own design. The cast has been announced as Trudi Camilleri as Anna Edson Taylor, with Will Arundell, Emily Juler, Emma Ralston, Tom Blackmore, Conor McFarlane and Andrew Carter. More info on WhatsOnStage. |

Looking forward to seeing this, it's one of the LaChuisa scores I really like listening to.
I suspect it will be tough sell though but I wish it all the best of luck

Do we really need a musical about a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel? Do we really need a musical about rapping American revolutionaries? Seriously, why should we not "need" this musical? I don't know anything about it, but surely it always depends on how a story is told? This seems to be more about an elderly lady, setting out against all odds to do something utterly crazy - sounds like a good yarn about following your dream and never being too old for crazy stuff and at least it's something fresh and original in a sea of jukebox musicals and movie adaptations. I wish it well! |

If you go to see a show about a woman going over Niagara Falls in a barrel.... I want to see her go over the Falls. Do it as a cartoon, do it as a film, or a Circus experience... but what's the point of setting it to songs, in a show where you'll probably not care a jot for the other characters, and in a theatre where you won't actually be able to show the denouement with any credibility.
Is she going to be singing.... in a barrel.... as she goes over the edge?

Just remembered. "Mist" means something else in German. It's why they didn't call the Rolls Royce the "Silver Mist." As its set at Niagra surely it will all just get flushed away? |

I enjoyed it. It is nice to see a story about an older, morally corrupt woman and I loved the costumes and live band but it will be a hard sell. I saw it tonight and I quite liked it. The music was very enjoyable especially the ensemble pieces. It had a vaudeville feel to it at times. The singers were all brill and the harmonies were beautiful.
The story is an odd one to make it into a musical but I liked that it told a real life story. I enjoyed the second half more which wasn't anymore about her act but more about her as a human being. The second part often felt more like a drama with songs than a musical.
The staging with the traverse auditorium wasn't the best as the actors had to project their voices to two opposing directions but i felt I was sitting on the better side of the stage.

I feared this would be a very hard sell at Charing Cross and sadly that looks to be well founded. The ticket sales look absolutely appalling. Ignoring the handful of seats which are off sale for every performance, each upcoming performance I've checked is barely into double figures in terms of audience numbers, some have even less than that. The evening of Wednesday 21st August currently seems to have 11 tickets sold, with one person having the entire block of seating on one side of the auditorium to themselves. After Amour closed early, it's hard not to wonder how much longer this particular venue can carry on like this.  |
