Oh I’ve just had mine through and still booked for this Friday! And I’ve also been moved forward 2 rows. I’ve just been rescheduled for July. Such a shame! |

Apparently ALW stands by it being a Saturday and will take anyone who says otherwise to court , before backing down at the last minute.

So... as far as my memory serves, there has never been an ALW musical since Joseph that hasn't featured at least one melody we haven't heard somewhere before. The only possible exception is Starlight - obviously one of the melodies had been previously released as Engine of Love, but as that was arguably the genesis of the whole project, I'd say that doesn't count.
Is anyone planning up for playing 'Spot the Tune' in Cinderella, or do we think this will be the exception to the rule?!

Then Steve that's 3 appearances for "Next Time You Fall In Love" - as, in the weirdest and cleverest (and most disguised) bit of recycling, it's the same tune as "The Ballad Of Billy MacCaw" from CATS.

Got my email and I'm still going to the first preview after all, and have been moved by just one seat to the side so I'm really pleased. I've never seen a literal brand new show before so I'm really excited about that aspect of going.

I only recently discovered that some of the tune of 'Tyre Tracks and Broken Hearts' had been reused from the song 'English Girls' from the Broadway version of Song and Dance.

I would say, based only on my experience, to definitely keep in mind that a first preview for big technically challenging shows can be quite rough. I'm sure the director will give a little speech reminding the audience of this before curtain up, as is common nowadays. Shows I've done, we are always rehearsing until the very minute (every second counts) the doors are open to the public, then have notes again afterwards, then rehearsing all the next day and so on. I've opened with big, expensive shows where we have never had a rehearsal without show stops. A clean first preview is a pipe dream for a brand new multi million pound work. They can run very long, especially if they stop or take a long interval, so factor this into your journeys and last train home, etc. Don't get caught having to leave midway through the second Act, as I had to do seeing an early preview of Gone With the Wind. I was told by a friend in the show, that performance was over 4 hours in the end... One last thing, I find it fun personally to try and note down a rough plot guidelines and songs on the train home while I remember them, as inevitably numbers will be cut, scenes changed around and whatnot. It's fun to compare if you decide to see it again when it is opened. |

Yeah I’m really hoping that considering they have been rehearsing in the actual theatre since the beginning that the show should run pretty smoothly. I think Carrie has also mentioned that they have had a pretty good amount of time to tech the show so hopefully we won’t experience too many preview problems.

Okay, so there isn't, one single show by ALW, apart from his first performed musical, that doesn't feature at least one snippet of previously released music. Oh no! hang on! I'm going to correct myself. Joseph has the fanfare bit from the song Probably on Thursday, doesn't it?! I'm not critical of this, btw. Sometimes it takes a while for a tune to find its home. But I do think that, if the melody has appeared somewhere pretty prominent already, it seems strange to reuse it! |

Fingers crossed we don't have too many issues - my last train home is 11:30 from Euston so if it runs to four hours I'll need to leave!  I'm also very excited to be at the first preview of a brand new show. I've been at several first previews of US transfers, but the only other time I've been at a new one was part two of Cursed Child (having picked up the ticket from someone on here who was at part one but then couldn't make part two). |

I can't claim it - read it somewhere else; was a bit of a 'wow' to me as I would never have noticed, but there it was. I really like the fact, and it's a great one for composition students or an anecdote for a compilation show - how feel and time signature transform something. Billy McCaw in 3/4 or 6/8 and Next Time in 4/4. While we're spotting, I'll add: A single line of 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' is in JCS just before the words "You're a fool Jesus Christ'" in the trial. & 'Summer Day' from Jeeves is 'Another Suitcase..." "Summer Day, hark the sound of the plover" / "So what happens now, another suitcase in another hall" |

Also, while we're spotting, keep a look out in CINDERELLA, as there's an animal that gets name checked in the lyrics of 3 very different ALW musicals, suggesting his obsession isn't with cats after all.....
