Finally got round to listening to the concept album.
Bits I liked, bits I didn’t.
It’s made me want to see it.
18th August gives plenty of time to rework if they want to….

I do still think that regardless of when it opens, we likely won't see much of a change to the show. They changed so little over previews, just seems like they're happy with it as is. Plot holes aside... (why is the queen frequenting some tawdry inn? why does she suddenly no longer care about this blackmail material at the end? why does the godmother accept the necklace as payment, and why does she happily just give it back to Sebastian???) I have notes for ALW, don't get me wrong. I just don't think he cares. A lot of people have been on social media very enthusiastically praising the show as one of the best things they've ever seen. Rose-tinted post-lockdown glasses? Perhaps. But the reception has hardly been 'make changes or this will die a painful death'

They also tag the show and ALW in their tweets, so they can be seen to be fawning over it. No one ever tags them when they think it's crap.

Exactly - so the feedback they're getting directly on social media is all very positive. They don't seem to want to make any more substantial changes to the piece. They've already had an extended preview period to do so (on top of their two years of development) and the most they did was change a few lines. There are bigger changes between the 'concept album' and the first preview than there have been from the first preview to last Friday. I have definitely seen worse shows than Cinderella. If these people have only seen Cinderella and I Can't Sing: The X Factor Musical, I think it would be fair to consider Cinderella the best... Or maybe if they saw the performance of the Tess of the D’Urbervilles musical that I had to walk out of because it was uncomfortable to sit through :') Cinderella is certainly not the biggest travesty to grace the stage.

Tess is easily in my top 3 worst musicals of all time. There were about 30 or 40 in the audience in the Savoy on a Thursday night. I'm not sure which was worse, having to sit and watch it, or having to sing that material. I doubt we'll see major changes to this production, but hopefully the next production will be after a major overhaul.

Some people might also have the rule I try to keep to, because of how visible Twitter is. I'll praise a show on Twitter, but I won't slate one. I'll save my criticisms for other spaces like my own Facebook or occasionally here. I don't need to bring down the extremely public buzz for a show. Nobody tries to produce a bad show. From the cast recording (concept album?) this sounds a bit disjointed to me, but it was enough to get me to buy a ticket.

There's some snobbery here, isn't there. Cinderella could genuinely be someone's favourite show. It's fun, tuneful with a slice of humour.
My favourite TV show is Doctor Who. I am WELL aware of it's shortcomings but I like it despite (or even because of) those shortcomings. It appeared in my life at the right time and hit the right places for me. I can easily imagine someone finding Cinderella doing exactly the same.
Tell us your favourite production and I can guarantee it wont match 99% of other people's and there will be a number of people who think it's a stinker.
Mine certainly wont be to everyone's taste - Dr Faustus, Manchester Royal Exchange in the mid80s with Ben Kingsley.

Snobbery? Probably. Being facetious? 100%.
Good for them if they enjoy it. At least it sets a very low bar for everything else they see after!
Favourite productions? Joseph (1991) and kiss of The Spider Woman
Anyone who thought that that production of Joseph was a stinker either didnt see it, (but no doubt has an opinion on it anyway) or they're just dead insode.

Well i went with a group of friends two weeks ago. Two of them said it was good the other two (including me) HATED IT.
Andrew/Laurence Connor if you are reading this this is what you need to do.
Open the show with Bad Cinderella.
Cut So Long and write a new duet.
Cut Unfair and write a better song.
Cut the gym song and write a better song
Write a fun new chorus song
Rewrite the whole end of act one and new song for godmother and remove all plastic surgery links and the awful screen/swap idea that was done in 1903. In fact rewrite the whole godmother storyline/character.
Focus The Ball start of Act 2 - you don’t know where to look.
Cut Moment of Silence - worst song in the show. Write something better!
Give the whole show a purpose. Don’t make Carrie and Sebastián a love item. There is no chemistry and they don’t match in any way.
Don’t make any LGBT references camp - it’s offensive now. Why can’t they be masculine hunks? For ONCE!
Write another duet in second half.
Put revolve to the end of the show - USE IT!
This will make the show 1 stars to 3 from me. There are some good tunes there! The rest was dreadful.

I'd be devastated if they cut So Long! I love the melody and I think Carrie and Ivano (and also Carrie and Michael, when he was on!) work really well together. It's the perfect song to establish their friendship, and the tension between them they're ignoring. Also the little reprise is possibly my favourite part in the show :') Relationships in musicals almost never feel genuine, but this one really does.

(Except the writing of the past two series….) You make a good point though. I enjoy lots of things on a ‘guilty pleasure’ basis - it’s entirely possible to love something of dubious quality! My musical CDs are arranged alphabetically, meaning Starlight Express sits next to Sunday in the Park With George. I can’t think of two more different shows, but I love them both for very different reasons.

Well I guess snobbery can be allowed. Facetious though? Seriously, it winds me up a little if people's opinions are dismissed. I'm sure there are big fans of Cinderella and they should be allowed this. Keeping with ALW, I saw original productions of JCS, Evita and Cats and I would put both of Regent Park's productions (JCS and Evita) above those productions - actually Cats was pretty special as well. But what do I know, my favourite musical performance of all was Menier's Pippin.

"Cut So Long and write a new duet."
"I'd be devastated if they cut So Long!"
I think I can rest my case about differing opinions.

Oh I think it's undeniable that there are certainly different opinions of the show on this thread :') Pretty sure some people would be happy to see it never reopen, regardless of whether they plan to see it or not! For all its faults, and I don't deny it has them, I personally do enjoy it

I don't mind - they reduced the tickets so much I could afford to see it 4 times.

That's the thing about people's taste, it's different for all of us. What I consider great someone else will think is awful! I guess it's difficult to see everyone's view when we can be so passionate about something.

The word facetious comes from the French facétie, “joke" or if you want to go back further, The word comes from the Latin facetia, meaning "jest." It wasnt a serious comment.... you know, like the ones you made above about Evita at Regents Park being good...
