I liked their performance of It Works tonight. Rodger and Olly sold it as best they could out of the context of the full show.
I think the BTTF cast positively promoted their show, as opposed to Moulin Rouge last night whose performance was out of tune at the beginning and all over the place.
And I like both BTTF and MR alot.
In fact I’m going to see BTTF tomorrow night. Yay!

Confirmed to open in New York in 2023 (exact time and theatre tba).
I wonder if they will close London and ship the set to NYC. It seems to do OK business but does seem easy to get tickets for, often at a discount

I have seen much better musicals but as an experience in a theatre it is really up there for me. Been 5 times and in a moment of madness have booked for matinee and evening on back to the future day. Tempted by cast change but their last night is a Monday which will feel weird!
The joy it brings is worth it alone.

It's a great theme park ride but it's a terrible musical Don’t think a terrible musical can win a WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award… WOS is a nothing as it's fan voted and the public vote on name recognition (Amanda Holden won best Actress in a musical one year...!) and it was pretty slim pickings at the Olivier's for new musicals (and I thought Frozen miles better and much more visually exciting) |

Oh it's a good experience and like, it's getting in people who don't go to the theatre.
I just think it'd be much better in the vain of Harry Potter, as a play with stage magic/tricks.
The score is...truly horrendous.

The score is...truly horrendous. Well I go to the theatre and I loved it. The score, as you say, isn't what makes it special but it's serviceable and there are some good songs ("It Works" is a cracker). I don't agree that it's horrendous. I think what sealed it for me was how extremely well cast it was. Roger Bart in particular was wonderful. |

Not sure what Broadway theatre is similar to the Adelphi but this would be a great show to reopen The Palace Theatre. Otherwise probably the Lunt Fontanne or the St James.

I saw The Little Mermaid at the Lunt-Fontanne and it is probably the single worst "top" theatre I've been in. Awful venue.

I LOVE the show, I’m one of its biggest fans, but I think the lyrics to some songs could do with a rewrite before it hits Broadway, I think they will be a bit more harsh on it.
Biffs song is also very samey to the end of act 1 song, so I think they might give him another song. But tbh I do like the songs, it’s got all the ingredients, we just need more than basic lyrics.
But cast change, Cedric is leaving, has anyone else in the main cast announced anything?

They cut it as they believed it made people side with Biff which isn’t what was wanted. I do agree with this however it was a much better song than Teach Him A Lesson in my opinion. Biff's song as it stands in the show right now was a real low point. No reflection on the actor, it was just completely unnecessary and brought everything to a halt.

I didn't like it much the first time I saw it (front stalls are definitely the wrong choice here) and groaned with every new song, because I was itching to see how it was all translated to the stage. The music only grew on me after listening to the album a few times, removed from the action and impatience live in the theatre. Some things are also just problematic. Solely listening to "My Myopia" on the album, I think it's a surprisingly good song about outsiders, nerds and geeks hiding in whatever helps them to get through the day and shutting out the outside world. On stage it's just squicky having to watch George spy on Lorraine during that song. Similarly "For the Dreamers" is a lovely song in which Doc acknowledges (real life) scientists who went for the impossible and dreamers in general, but in the show it made me jump with impatience as I was waiting to get to the "good" parts (the dance and Marty's journey back to 1985) and just wanted them to get on with it. Revisiting the show later from a much better seat in the Dress Circle and with none of that impatience, I enjoyed it all much more. And the atmosphere in the packed theatre was still great with entrance applause and scene applause for the best bits. It's a show that delivers just what people want right now, I think, pure big entertainment that allows them to forget all the awfulness of the real world out there. Personally I just can't muster any interest in shows right now that try to bash me over the head with "issues" or try to ram political points home, so if it's between movie adaptations, jukebox biography musicals à la Tina and Drifters Girl and heavy-going shows about issues, I rather choose the movie adaptations with fresh music and some creativity. And I may just start adding that to every post on this forum: Give me Hadestown back. |
