I think Hairspray is one of those shows were you have to stick to having actors of certain races play certain roles, Omid Djalili is a fine actor and a great comedian but the central theme of segregation in the show may not work having a person of colour play a white role and vice versa.

There really are some dreadful suggestions coming up. First Omid Djalili and now Lee Evans. Just waiting for someone to say Piers Morgan.

Awww no. Lee Evans would be cute, I think! I like him. The only thing is that it might draw an unsavoury crowd, similar to that of OFAH. You know, the wives that drag their husbands along to a musical and they tell them; "oh but it's Only Fools and Horses" or "oh, but Lee Evans is in it" - then the men get considerably drunk and start talking and yelling during the show... Fun.

Fairly sure Michael Ball recorded a version of it with the London cast on one of his albums.

Well, I’ve caved and booked for this. I had one gap in my June weekend, my recently converted to musicals friend (Tina! and &Juliet) fancied it and he’s qualifies for the access scheme so we’ve got 2 of the £97 stalls tickets for the price of one. Front row, we’ll be looking right up Michael’s frock.

I sat there for Sunset Boulevard and Chess. It was fine. My bff is partially sighted so that trumps my Princess Needy legroom issues!

Won't Paul Merton be filming HIGNFY during the run, I assume that'll mean an understudy or alternate on Thursdays.

Does anyone know who will be playing Velma? Someone kind of announced about 4 months ago that it was Amanda Holden but I've heard nothing about that since.

The spring/summer series of HIGNFY usually runs until late May/early June - so there'd definitely be some overlap. It's possible that he's taking a break from HIGNFY as he did in the mid-90s when he sat out a series - appearing in only one episode - as the guest panellist on Ian Hislop's team. That was, however, in the days when they had a regular host so there was rather more continuity than there would be now. Or indeed as you say, he may miss a few Thursday evening performances (and presumably matinees too).

Hmm, that is an odd choice. I do really like Paul Merton but I can't imagine him in a singing role. Has he done much stage work other than stand-up and pantomime?
That's not to say it won't work though - I would never have imagined Jason Manford as a good musicals actor, yet he's doing very well at it.

Wilbur only has one song doesn’t he? The duet with Edna? It’s more the fact that he’s a nice, sympathetic character which I can’t see cynical deadpan Paul Merton pulling off.
