This was one of my favourite films as a kid! Hopefully they can do it justice on the stage, especially on a stage like the Dominion.

It's a smart move to call it a limited run. A limited run that long always reads as hoping to extend or become open-ended, and given its history with American in Paris and Bat, it's a smart choice to call it limited, then if it bombs it can just get to the end and be like oooo we made it to the end of our "limited run". 😂 It's certainly a brave choice and I'm intrigued to see how it goes! I'm certainly up for it!

The Regional US/European production of this looked v. stripped back & minimal, so hopefully its a new production for the Dominion?

It was directed by Stephen Schwartz son, Scott. So i'd expect its the same production as he'd be pretty hard to fire...
This is going to be so lost on that huge stage

If it does well, it would be certain to extend, Nederlander Group ain’t going to turf this out for a Christmas show, for it to be empty again. The producers says 32 weeks and I guess this is to manage expectations
Dreamworks had phenomenal success here with Shrek, which they didn’t get the same love on Broadway, so maybe that is a reason why they’re opening here instead of the US.
As for the show, let’s wait and see,

DreamWorks is interesting isn't it. Because whilst Shrek didn't last long compared to other long runners, it had a respectable almost two years long run, similar to 42nd Street and probably the same amount of time Charlie should of run had it closed rather than played to half empty houses toward the end. The downside to DreamWorks is they really downscaled for the UK production of Shrek, and it looked like it didn't belong on the massive Drury Lane stage for how cheap it looked, which obviously was for financial reasons. So the upside for this production is whilst it is playing a barn, if it's her same production as the US tryouts it should be cheap set wise and follow suit with Shrek. I guess we will just have to wait and see. On paper, it doesn't scream huge success but we've been proven wrong before!

And if it’s only doing a 32 week run, don’t expect it to be a spectacle. that is going to be a real issue, the film isn't Shrek, or Disney, I can't say I even remembered the film until it was brought up today with the news of the musical. It's lasting legacy, if any, is the song "When You Believe" and that is mostly because of Mariah and Whitney. this is a show that will rely on word of mouth and a strong promotional campaign, as well as reasonable pricing, which we haven't seen from the Dominion ever so I'll be intrigued to see how that one works out. 😂😂 |
