Next year looks set to make them a lot of cash. I’m gonna be that person who can’t tell you what it is, but I’ve heard Baz is announcing on Thursday so you should know soon enough. (Will say they’ve gone for a new-er musical than what they have done previously) Is that the next Grade / Linnet one or another incoming production like On Your Feet / Bat Out of Hell?

There is no next grade/linnet. This is their last co-production with ENO. The new show will a different beast entirely - in terms of the ENO deal anyway

The new show will a different beast entirely - in terms of the ENO deal anyway I won't miss the Grade /Linnet, musicals too many wasted opportunities. What ever ENO's next commercial endeavours I wish them the best of luck.

Wonder if they would be better off just producing the musicals themselves and doing a longer run, rather than trying to bring in star names and commercial partners. Like Opera North do for instance.

I was thinking Aida too actually You snooze, you lose! If it's right, we'll both take the credit. We'll be like the Brownlee brothers where I help push you across the finish line.

Oh that would be good. I'd also like to see someone do The Witches of Eastwick. I doubt that's a guaranteed money spinner though so probably not the show in this case.

Which Witch?

In the case of Chess, the main problem was that it was a truly awful production - in as far as how it was directed. There was more than enough money on show to have created a fantastic production. It looked brilliant, but was directed like a concert, with no intelligence in any of the staging or characterisation. The cast all had good voices, but it felt like not one minute was spent on actually directing them! More like. "Just go out there and sing... and shout out the odd few words of inane dialogue."
I had hoped that part of the plan of these summer shows, was to bring new life into musicals that had maybe not been seen for a while, or really got the right treatment in the past. Sadly, with Chess it only brought new death to the piece!!! It had some good moments, but most of these were the joy of the score and the orchestra/chorus, but that is not enough to make a great theatrical event. The bad reviews were totally justified and well deserved.
I don't think I'll get to see MOL and it's not a fave score, but it would be a shame if they do stop doing them - they do seem like a good idea on paper, but they must be well done. We all know that a huge set etc. is not required to make a great event - just high class, imaginative direction and of course good casting. Maybe they need to go back to the drawing board and work out the kind of shows that can best work in this way and find some great directors.
The prices do seem a bit excessive and would certainly put me off, but then again, there do always seem to be some great offers out there and I guess like most shows, there are a range of prices and they have stuck with these high prices, so I guess it must be working for the company financially.
I'd love to see Kristina (by Bjorn and Benny) staged at the ENO for a limited run, but much as I think this could be amazing, I don't think it would be a financial success. It's a brilliant score (but the English lyrics are pretty awful) so I think a complete rewrite would be needed and that's not going to happen and of course not a lot of people know it. Still, this is the kind of think that would be amazing for the ENO to do. Candide would be brilliant too.

They should get The Hoff back into Jekyl and Hyde. His performance on the DVD is legendary.....

I'd really liked them to do Aida, or Beauty and the Beast at some point...

Ragtime demands the epic approach.
(starring Daniel Day Lewis and Amanda Holden, of course)

But have the Coliseum musicals done badly financially?
Capacity is around 2,400.I wouldn't have thought they needed to sell more than 70% to break even, especially as the premium stalls and dress circle prices usually sold very well.
Certainly the performances I have attended in the stalls have always looked very healthy.
Even for MOLM,the Rush tickets are mainly towards the back and extreme sides of the stalls.
It would be good to see the facts about this from someone who knows, and not guesswork, often by those who love sniping at ENO.

I spent a little of yesterday afternoon trying to get to the financial bottom of things. The two Michaels, and their families, have created separate limited companies for each production they've staged at the Coliseum.
Because each company is classed as small, it only has to submit abbreviated accounts to Companies House, so I'm afraid I didn't get very far.
And even post-Maxwell, the profit or loss a company reports is still largely what the directors, aided by a good accountant, want it to be.

It's all guess work, however, you don't have to be an accountant to work out that with this show it isn't making the money the producers hoped. The costs are fixed - hire of theatre, cast, orchestra, crew, sets, costumes, creative fees etc. The box office take is poorer than anticipated with the gallery closed, LOTS of empty seats, dynamic discounting downwards (I noticed that seats that were £105 in the stalls are now £75 etc.) - a 25% reduction, and discounting - rush tickets etc. So although they may cover costs - the profit will be far less than hoped/anticipated. This show will not take the money the other shows have done I am sure.

if they wanted to get full use of the huge orchestra and the ENO chorus, I wish they would do Titanic. It's such a big cast that you could throw in some big names in smaller parts and leave the leads to some proper singers.
well I can dream!

Candide would be brilliant too. ENO did Candide in 2008. If I recall correctly it went down fairly well, though the production was "interesting" in places.

Yea I loved that one, but that's quite a while back and could work well in a year or two in a new (maybe more traditional) production - though I'd be happy to see it done in a crazy new production of any kind if it was well directed.
