Any opinions about The Picture of Dorian Gray? It has been touring and will be in Richmond during my upcoming London visit. It sounds intriguing. (A different adaptation will grace the Jermyn Street Theatre later on, but I won't be in town for it.)

I booked for Richmond as reviews from the tour had been good and I have never seen this - though it sounds rather heavy, so I'm going to a matinee and something I hope will be lighter in the evening.

I saw it a few weeks ago and thought about posting but I'd never seen a full production before so was hesitant. I found it unclear. In particular the way the painting was done meant that you wouldn't have followed the story if you went in cold. This was confirmed by mutterings around me at the interval from people who were baffled. It seemed that the progression of the story was diluted and the ending was robbed of its significance, for me. I'll be interested to hear how others view it as I'm far from knowledgeable about previous versions of the play.

I saw it in Keswick a couple of weeks ago and although I am roughly familiar with the plot I found it difficult to follow at times. I think the problems were, firstly, the single set with different locations indicated only by lighting. There were several times where I found myself trying to work out where the scene was taking place. Secondly, and similarly, I found some of the characters played by the company insufficiently distinct and found myself wondering who they were meant to be in this scene. Overall I enjoyed it, but was glad I already had some idea what was going on.
