I assume Paul only agreed to play Miss Hannigan if it wasn't as Lily Savage. I also assume he’d do Lily Savage for the right retirement payday or charity gig. Never say never. |

A quick Google for Miss Hannigan in the Curve production comes up with Lesley Joseph, Miranda Hart, Anita Dobson, Meera Syal and Craig Revel Horwood, all in the exact same outfit and red wig. It may not be billed as Lily Savage but it’s not an accident that they’ve given Paul a blonde wig.

I'm old enough to have seen Lily Savage before she was famous. Bloody funny!
She did a concert once at the Purcel Rooms on the Southbank and on the stage was a huge box of Peril.

I saw her a couple of times in Sheffield dive bars before she was famous. I stood next to her once at the bar of “Breakers” where she was relaxing with a pre-show drink and chatting with the bar staff. She was drinking from a glass the size of a goldfish bowl which, she claimed, all drag queens love because it makes their massive hands look dainty. “What’s this dump called again? Brekkies?”
The next time I saw her she was massive and it was in a packed Sheffield City Hall. She was one of those comics who just knew how to play the audience, timing the jokes until we were in some sort of laughing stupor, then pulling back a bit then going again to a new crescendo. Fantastic act who learned her craft on the Northern circuit.

Just remembered I also went to a recording of Blankety Blank some years ago. Everytime the cameras stopped rolling she lit a fag and told the producers where to go when they tried to stop her. The dialogue between filming was absolutely hilarious as you can imagine and the air was blue.
Also saw her in Coronation Street The Musical at the arena in Manchester but the less said about that the better.

He was hugely popular as a chat show host throughout the 2000s and 2010s so modern audiences would more than likely know exactly who he is. Along with his Battersea Dogs' Home shows he's become something of a national treasure in his own right since retiring Lily. |

He has brought her back on a few occasions over the years yes, but Lily isn't his full time gig anymore. I do think that they intentionally gave him a blonde wig in this to capitalise on her popularity though - roots and all! |
